A friend is turning 30 and is about to have a son. I want to make him a cake with one big football (have the pan) and one little football (no pan available) to represent his son. Any ideas on how I can make a little football without having a pan?

yep I do......I made a turkey cake and needed a mini egg pan and didn't have one (they quit selling them after Easter and it was around thanksgiving) anyhow....I got some of those mini loaf pans the disposable foil ones......I think I paid .59 for 3 of them! Anyhow I took one loaf pan and used a plastic egg and put it in the foil pan and then squashed the pan around the egg forming the pan into the shape of the egg......then I took that pan which still had it's edges and such and put it inside of another pan (because now the bottom was round and wouldn't sit in the oven without tipping to bake) and stuck it in the oven like that and it worked perfectlly. Maybe you could buy a cheap hard plastic mini football at the dollar store and do the same thing I did with the egg??? Hey it's worth a shot......or maybe you could just use the mini egg pan LOL If you can find one

If you have time look on ebay I saw several mini football pans and mini egg pans. If not how about using an egg shaped cookie cutter and cutting out of a sheet cake-stacking several layers on top-would probably have to carve a bit. I'm having a similiar problem with my son's birthday cake, but I have decided to cut several rice krispies into the shape of eggs and "round" the edges before using BC icing. Hope this helps.

Could you use cake ball dough to make the little football?

Do you have any mini oval pyrex pans? I have used those and they work well.
