The recipe for Rice Krispie treats on the Kelloggs website includes butter. Has anyone made it without the butter? Does it strengthen the shape if it doesn't have the butter?

Also wondering if anyone has used any of the flavored rice krispies, like berry or cocoa.

Several years ago I forgot the butter when I made cereal bars and the marshmallow got really hard and it didn't taste very good.

My hasband LOVES krispie treats made with the Reeses Peanut Butter cereal (cant remember who makes it tho). It looks a little disgusting in the pan but the taste definitely makes up for that!!

I always use butter, and put 1 cup less rice krispies than the recipe calls for because we like them a little gooey icon_smile.gif

Do you use it to make shapes?

If you are using it for shaping and covering with fondant, less or no butter would be better because it dries so hard. Be sure to coat your pan with something before melting the MM though, or you'll have a nice big gooey mess without butter to make it slide. Yum-that sounds good right now!!

I have made rice krispie treats by adding 1/4 cup of cocoa to the melted marshmallow/butter mixture then adding a few chocolate chips and/or cashews after adding the cereal. My boyfriend loves them!

Forgot to add that sometimes I use the chocolate rice krispies when I do this. Depends on how much chocolate we are looking for. (Usually a lot!)

our fav version of the crispie treats is to use honey bunches of oats (instead of rice crispies) and then add in some chocolate chips. the cinnamon and chocolate play off each other and it's wonderful!

Occasionally, I'll add about 2 T of peanut butter (omit the regular butter) after you melt the marshmallow. It's yummy.

If you are going to use them for modeling and then covering with fondant I would use Duff Goldmans method of rolling the rice krispie with a rolling pin first and not using any butter in the recipe. He mentioned on the cereal skcraper challenge that rolling the krispies gave him a smoother finish and omitting the butter made the mixture dry firmer.

Oh man, do I LOVE Rice Krispies treats!!! I've made them with Cocoa Krispies before, and they are actually very, very sweet. I like them better with just the plain Rice Krispies. I have never made them with butter ... always with margarine (or actually, Parkay sticks or Country Crock sticks), and they turn out great. I agree that you'll want to use less butter (or margarine) if you're using them for molding.

P.S. - All of the other cereal treats that people have mentioned here sound YUMMY, too!!! They're also really good with Fruity Pebbles or Honey Nut Cheerios!! icon_smile.gif
