i did a wedding cake where the MOB supplied the shells that the couple had picked up in Hawaii. she washed them in bleached and rinsed them. so they were all ready for me to place on the cake. they seemed clean enough to me.

Why not make your own edible shells?

Edible shells are easy to do. You will need a shell mold. You can find them at Michaels, Hobby Lobby, or on the internet. I used Wilton candy melts. I like to use colors that you find in nature. I think it looks more natural, but you can use any color chocolate you want. Follow the instructions on the package. After I poured the chocolate into the mold, I placed them in the refrigerator. It seemed to speed up the process. They looked great on Cara's Sweet Sixteen Luau Cake. I hope this helps.

I made my shells out of fondant using candy moulds. You can see them in my photos.

edible shells ar the way to go!

the ones on this cake are fondant mixed with a little tylose.

but if you want to use real ones, I would soak in a mild bleach solution for 30 minutes, them rinse and dry completely before putting on cake/board.

Thanks everyone. I plan to make some for her table but she has her heart set on real seashells for her wedding cake.

A soaking in a 50/50 water and chlorine bleach solution will sanitize them - check out http://www.seashells.org/cleaning.htm
Use a soft brush to scrub if needed, and buff with a light, clear vegetable oil or mineral oil if you want them to shine.
