Does anyone have any ideas for using candy as a cake decoration? I was looking for some ideas on what would look fun & would also hold up on a cake for a day or two. I used a lollipop as a decoration once & I made the mistake of pushing it all the way down so the stick couldn't be seen (I was trying to make it look like a ball on a circus cake) & by the next morning the lollipop had started to melt a little & the color had ran all over the cake. I've not tried any other candy since because I'm not really sure what will work well. Any ideas? Thanks!

I've seen some beautiful cakes done with whoppers candy and I saw a cake with those starlight mints too....gorgeous!!

Hard candies will dissolve on buttercream over time, so try something else, or apply the candy to the cake as late as possible. I've used candy canes as antlers for reindeer cupcakes (VERY cute), but after a couple days the candy canes start to dissolve. The candy I use most I make using candy molds and CandyMelts. These never bleed or dissolve, and the kids love them.

Thanks for the idea for the candy melts! They sound like they would work great. I wonder if any kind of chocolates would work well (like hershey kisses, mini Cadbury eggs, etc.?) I just tried some candy pumpkins (the kind that are like candy corn) on a cake & the worked pretty good too.

I've used Hershey's kisses when I'm decorating a chocolate cake...my sister and her fellow nurses can't get enough chocolate! I've also used TootsieRolls to make teddy bears, which look great on a baby cake or Christmas cake. Warm it a bit in your hands, and you can model it fairly easily. You can also use gumdrops (I've seen these sliced to form flower petals), and have used fruit roll-ups for tongues on a frog cake.

I used a tootsie roll once to make a sand castle for a beach cake. I've also used gum balls, candy corn, M&Ms. . . Never had any problem with melting yet.

Orange slices work really well too..........The sugar keeps them from melting...........
