My dog's birthday is coming up September 3, and I wanted to make her a cake. I was wondering if anyone has used a recipe with whole wheat or oat flour in place of all purpose flour and honey in place of sugar. I was thinking about putting strawberries in it or something and "icing" it in cream cheese. Thank you!

I once made a cake for a friend's dog, and I used dog food for it. I got the moist burger-type dog food and mixed it with some w/w flour and some water and mixed it all up and pressed it into a pan lined with parchment. I baked that just briefly so that it was set. Then I turned it out onto a cake board. Then I used some baby food mixed with some w/w flour to make it piping consistency. The baby food was spinach, lamb, and something else like carrot, I forgot what it was, I picked it out for the colors so that I wouldn't need to add any extra coloring to it. I used that stuff for icing. Then I piped the dog's name and a border with the baby food, too.

I have made one--got the recipe from Three Dog Barkery. I "frosted' it with instant mashed potatoes. Remember--no salt in dog cakes as it is bad on the dog's kidneys. I make homemade treats for mine.
THe only time I use liver in my house is in treats. When my babies smell that--they KNOW!!! Then I have the hardest time stepping over ALL of them at the stove... icon_lol.gif

On that note, I have seen pictures of "Gourmet Dog Bones" and it looks like they iced the bones w/ royal icing...although I now it's not. Does anyone now what it is that they use? I emailed some companies but they won't respond...hmmmm...I wanted to start making doggie treats also. icon_smile.gif

I make some doggy treats. Still trying to perfect some textures, etc. You can safely dip doggy treats in carob or white chocolate.

Thank you for your responses, but I think I want to make something on the sweet side (using honey not sugar) because my dog LOVES cake. I know it's crazy, but everytime I eat cake she'll sit in front of me begging for it and I'll give her a little bite, so I wanted to make something so she can have the whole piece of cake. I was just wondering if it would work to use oat flour and honey in replace of the AP flour and sugar. Do yall think it will work? I'm probably going to make it either today or tomorrow.

I made it already .. forgot to post pics. Here they are! I just found a regular strawberry cake recipe and replaced the all purpose flour with oat flour and honey for sugar. I iced it in cream cheese (should have mixed it with a little bit of yogurt to keep it soft) and I did a frozen cream cheese transfer of a pirate. I gotta go to my computer to get the pictures. I'm on my mom's.
