I have a bridal shower cake that I have been asked to make for my nephew's soon-to-be wife. The shower isn't until October, but I want to get some ideas for a cake soon so that I can start planning what I need etc and just getting an idea of how the cake will look.

I was thinking of making one of the 'bridal doll' cakes as a topper for the cake but I am out of ideas for what to put the bridal doll on top of. I thought maybe the bride-to-be could take home the bridal doll cake if she wanted so that part wouldn't be eaten by those at the shower. I think there will be approximately 20 people at this shower so it doesn't have to be really big. But, I don't have any idea how to make the cake that will be eaten at the shower. Bear in mind that I am not an expert with fondant (I'm going to try to make the dolls dress out of fondant and buttercream) so I will likely use buttercream for the main cake. I have only ever covered one cake with MMF and I had it on there a little too thick...so I will have to work on the fondant part. Their colours for the wedding are shades of brown...should I put a white bride on top of a shades of brown cake? What about flowers??? I make pretty good BC roses but I don't know what colour to do those either. If I do make a cake with shades of brown, what kind of design? One tier, two tier...????

I really don't think I will be charging my sister for the cake (maybe for my supplies), but if I were making this cake and charging for it, what would you charge for that many people and for the bridal cake topper?

Geez I need help. I pray someone has some suggestions. You all have great ideas and make such great cakes...I know there is someone out there that does...

I also would like to know what size of cakes (if I do a tiered cake) I will need to feed 20 or so people. My hubby says I should just do a flat cake, not layered...That is so blah...

BTW, my sister doesn't care what I do so it is totally up to me for this one.

I think that this cake is very pretty. Really simple and elegant. It incorporates the brown with chocolate. You could make a small-scale version of it. I like the fall-colored flowers, but I also think that lighter colors like pinks and ivorys would be gorgeous on it too, and you wouldnt even have to go that overboard on the flowers, especially if you are good at doing buttercream flowers. The picture looks like chocolate fondant, but if you are really good with buttercream, you could do a chocolate buttercream, and pipe the scrolls on. You could even do the scrolls a lighter color chocolate on the bottom tier if you wanted. The wedding dress would look pretty as the topper I think. Sorry I can't be more help!

This is a cake that Michelle Bommarito made, it's on her website. She does amazing work!! icon_smile.gif

You could do a 8" square or round (feeds 20 with the doll cake on top; or if you think you might want extra cake just in case a 9" feeds 24, 10" feeds 28. The tiered look, do an 8" and a 5 or 6" (6" feeds 12) with the doll for the bride to take home. If you should decide on doing a two tiered with doll top, you might want to consider doing the mini doll ( I say this because the diameter of the doll cake is 8"). She could still take it home, it will just be less cake but if only 20 people comes, she could have extra slices.

The tiered look, let's say there is three different shades of brown you need to work with; Do the two tiers in two sahades and do bc roses in the other shade and white to pull in the color of her dress.

One cake doll on top, one shade of brown, reverse shell border in other two shades with white bc roses.
