I am planning on making Sarah's Red Velvet cake today. Can I use the powdered buttermilk in place of the buttermilk in the recipe? Has anyone else ever used this and did it turn out ok? I have the Saco brand cultured buttermilk blend. It says to add the blend to your dry ingredients then add the appropriate amount of water when the recipe calls for liquid buttermilk.

Thank you,

Tabitha

I use it often in one of my recipes. I do sift it, because sometimes there are lumps. It blends better if sifted. Then add the water with the rest of the ingredients.

I have also used the powdered buttermilk in several recipes and I see no difference. I love it. It so convient. Just mix it up when you need it.

I use it all the time and have never had a bad result....probably just jinxed myself! icon_lol.gif

I kept buying buttermilk and never did use it up before it got too stinky icon_biggrin.gif , so I started using the powder form and love it...so convenient!

I always use powdered buttermilk when buttermilk is called for. I can't seem to use an entire carton of regular buttermilk so it always ends up going to waste.

How much powder do you use in place of regular buttermilk, e.g if a recipe calls for one cup of buttermilk, how much powdered do I need to use and I presume I need to add extra liquid too?

TIA

Measurements are on the canister of powdered buttermilk.

Mine doesn't have any measurements on it - that's why I asked!

I have the Saco brand
if the recipe calls for 2/3 cup buttermilk use 2 1/2 tbsp powder and 2/3 cup water
1 cup buttermilk use 4 tbsp. powder and 1 cup water

I've never used "real" buttermilk so I was also wondering how it actually compared.

Thanks! I've had this tin of powder in the cupboard for months and never used it, because there are no instructions on it, just says its a replacement for fresh buttermilk!

I'll try it out next time I make a buttermilk cake.
