Starting 6 years ago at hubby's company we hosted a birthday party for five employees who all turned 50 that year. I made the cake (pic of which is misplaced at this time) I made a two layer grave stone modled after the over the hill candle that said "here lies my youth"
yes all in black lol with flowers of course and very very heavy! it was a hit and i used the design several times with equal success.
the party itself was a hit so well we began an anual "Geezerfest" as we call it and every year we now host a Geezerfest where families are welcome; pitch a tent stay the night; kareoke (sp) etc and every year is a theme. one year was western, one was mardi gra etc.. this year is 70's theme.
I browsed through the galleries and saw a few ideas but i'd like to see if anyone has some more.
one that caught my eye was by Shalderman:
but since i'm not very skilled in fondant yet; if i go with this one it will have to be in a bc rendtion as i'm doing a county fair entry that same week lol..
I welcome ideas and pics especially if you have them.
its the 70s all over again- heaven help us lol
(we'll forget the fact i was born in 71 ) lol

To me, that cake seems more sixties than seventies. For the 70's, I immediately think of disco. Maybe a disco ball cake (you could cut mosaic tiles out of fondant and brush them with silver luster), or do a shirt cake but with the wide collar disco shirt (open chest with medallion necklace, of course) and maybe a pair of high-heeled clog disco shoes? Sounds like a fun tradition & I love the different themes!

Being as I love shoes (he he)....what about some platform shoes?

This probably won't help you with making a cake, but I can't help but think of the Brady Bunch.
darkchocolate

i_heart_pastry is right, that design is sooooooo 60's.
The 70's disco look include: stripe leasure suit, afro do's, hot pants look and Spandex tops. Shiny clinging Lycra stretch disco pants in hot strident shiny colours with stretch sequin bandeau tops were often adaptations of professional modern dance wear that found itself making an impact in discos as disco dancing became serious. Gold lame, leopard skin and stretch halter jumpsuits and white clothes that glowed in Ultra Violet lights capture the 70s Disco fashion perfectly.
I would go with round cakes with silver luster dusted tiles....and lots of dragrees. Maybe a wonderful topper with little silver balls on wire.
HTH

how about something with the "peace" symbol.....maybe even a "flower" child something or another! Disco/dance floor ....was tie/dye big then??!!!!!
sorry I wasn't more help. I'm sure you'll think of something!!!!!
maybe google it and see what pops up!
Good luck,
Mar

You could do something reminiscent (hope I spelled that right) of "Saturday Night Fever".

Pft.. thats what the planning committe gets for letting everyone else who Isn"T on part of the planning committee choose what theme..
everyone Else wants a 50's theme party and what i dont like about it is thats the theme for this year's county fair.
i mean thats like going to several new years parties one after the other.
gets redundant.
i tried to tell hubby last nite "lets do a toga party.." but he came up with a better one.. something 1930's prohibition era boy that'd be fun.
of course this all comes down after i finaly figured out the game plan for the cake i was going to do. a lava lamp. took me 3 days to decide how i was going to do it not so astesticaly pleasing (sp) but more so that ther'ed be enough cake for everyone (this party can get big) plus i was going to set this lava lamp cake on a tie dye swirled something base with power flowers peace signs and of course the ever affluent fondant rolled joint
So i really really thank you for stepping up and helping me when i needed ideas- very sad i'm not going to have an occassion any time soon for a 70'stheme cake but i'll be keeping these on file so i Do hve something to look for on
