I am thinking about buying a new mixer...a Viking.. tapedshut.gif . I own two Kitchen Aids and love them! The Viking is larger then anything I can get in Kitchen Aid and it has some really handy attachments. Anyone have or know anythign about them?

P.S. - don't shot me! tapedshut.gif

I've heard good things about it.

I'm partial to tilt head mixers and this is one with 7qts. The Delongi/Kenwood is also a 7qt tilt head mixer but the bowl does not have a handle like the Viking does.

Sorry I can't offer any information, but wanted to say I'm glad you posted this. I did not know viking had a mixer. I went to the site and watched the video demo - wow! what a machine.

I have the Viking mixer and the KA 6 quart mixer. If I had to keep only one, it would be the Viking mixer. I LOVE this mixer and praise it continuously! It is definitely the way to go! thumbs_up.gif

I've never used a Viking mixer, but I have a friend who bought one and she loves it. 7 qts?! Wow! I just bought a KA Pro Series 6 qt and it is just so awesome. I love using it. If you need a 7 qt then my bet is that you can't go wrong with a Viking.

Like you, I love my 4.5 quart KA, but I needed something with more capacity than KA offers. I bought the Viking 7 quart about 6 months ago. I love the big capacity, but I've been disappointed with the power. At low speeds it struggles and makes grinding and rattling noises like it's not going to be able to do the job (especially with buttercream). I also don't like the way the paddle just screws in -- there is no lock in place like with the KA, so a couple of times when scraping the paddle I've accidentally unwound it off. I do use it for quadruple batches of buttercream and cake batter, but in general I prefer to use the KA, my beloved little workhorse.

uummm, that makes me worried. The viking has 1000Watts while the 6qt KA only has 575Watts. It looks like it would be a lot more powerful, I am leary now.

Don't be leary! I don't know what model kelleym has but my Viking attachements hook on just like the KA and I never have problems with the power. It works fabulously and never fails on me with large or small batches of anything that I make. Just check out all the models and make sure that the paddles attach the same as a KA.

I am with Miriel, I have a Kenwood that I got on closeout when DeLonghi took over the company. It is a 7 Quart with the same planetary action as a KitchenAid but much more power and much lighter to lift if you have to move it. Same attachments, paddle, whisk, and dough hook. Mine is the Major Classic KM 800 and has 650 watts power, wonderful mixer. If DeLonghi has this model mixer I would go for it. I got mine at Williams Sonoma on closeout for $249.00, but that was 7 years ago so don't know if DeLonghi carries that model or what the price would be today. I seem to think it was a $400.00 mixer originally.

WOW, check this out. Neiman Marcus has a DeLonghi 7 quart with 1100 watts of power on sale for $399.00!

Now that is wierd. When I added that link it was on sale for $399.00 now when I opened the link the price has gone up to $450.00.

Alright, here is a DeLonghi 7 quart with 1000 watt power. Better price too.

I have the Viking 7-quart and LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!! The bowl is tapered in such a way that you can mix small amounts as easily as the large jobs. I make 11 pounds of icing at a time in it. The tilt head is convenient, but it doesn't fit under my cabinets. HOWEVER -- the unit is on wheels so it's no effort at all to slide it out from under the cabinet to use, then slide it right back into place when done.

That's where I got my Kenwood mixer on that same sale too! icon_smile.gif

It is Shirley! I really should use it more. It works great and the bigger bowl capacity is definitely a plus. The only thing I don't like about it is the missing bowl handle. It can certainly handle tough jobs - it's what I use to make bread.

Here is the chart out of Cook's Illustrated comparing mixers. You will probably have to use your zoom to read the details since I just scanned it into my computer. Hope this helps.

I so agree, that is the only drawback. I have often thought of taking mine to a metal shop and having them make a handle for me, just have never done it.

I also have the Viking 7 quart mixer. I LOVE it. Soooo much better than the KA I have. I love the bigger capacity. I don't make nearly as big of a mess making icing as I used to. Mine also came with a free blender that attaches to the same motor on the mixer. There are many attachments you can get to go with it. Get one...you won't regret it!

Too funny, they HATE my mixer (the electrolux). I guess it does specialize in breads, but if you know it's quirks, it's a great mixer. But it does have quirks. I use it for buttercream and breads in the big 8 quart bowl, and I use the smaller bowl for making cakes. It can mix up two cake recipes at a time. It just has a HUGE learning curve and the directions are pitiful, truly.

I don't think you can go wrong with a Pro KA, a Delonghi (as recommended) or the Viking or Hobart. You can't tell everything by how many watts... that's deceiving.
