Hello,
I am looking for cherry chips, like the ones they use in Betty Crockers Cherry Chip Cake Mix. My best friend loves that cake, but I find that when I use the box mix it always tends to be dry!!! I would like to find cherry chips that I could use in a white cake that would be pretty close to those used in the mix. If anyone has any suggestions, or knows where I could find these "chips" I would be very very greatful for all of your help!!!

I've cut up maraschino cherries into small pieces, and patted them really well with wads of paper toweling so that they are pretty dry. (If you don't do this, all the extra liquid might make your cake gummy and kinda pink.) Then I added them to a scratch yellow cake batter. I've never had the cherry chip mix, but the person I made it for has, and she liked the result.
You can find maraschino cherries at the supermarket, usually with the ice cream toppings.
HTH!

Why not use dried cherries? You can dice them up smaller if you need. I think you can find them with the bulk foods?

I have never seen BC's cherry cake mix. Do they only sell it in certain regions?? It sounds delicious. I brought a sleeve cherry filling and wondered if it would taste good with chocolate. I guess now I know it would taste yummy!!!

OOPS.. I thought the cake was chocolate cherry cake?? Boy.. you can tell where my mind is... in chocolate land!!

I saw a bag of cherry chips at walmart the other day, looked just like chocolate chips only cherry! Hope that's what you are looking for. I had never seen them before, but then again...I am in Arkansas!

The cherry chip recipes that are most common are ones that use pieces of maraschino cherries in them.

Hey, you could try adding a box of pudding mix to your current fav. cake mix to help w/ dryness! Just a thought!

Like angelwaggoner, I've also seen the bag of cherry chips in walmart... I wanted to purchase them, but didn't know what I would need them for...So... hmmm

They're mostly used to make cherry mash candy.... At least, that's all I've ever used them for. The recipe for the candy should be on the bag. I don't think I'd use them for the cake unless they could be chopped up finely before adding to the batter. Stick with the marachino cherries, that would be the best choice IMHO as well.

o.k. thanks kansaslaura, I'll have to get a bag and try it...

THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH!!!! I REALLY APPRECIATE IT
I do know about the cherry chips that are similar to chocolate chips. I get them at Wal*Mart, and they are yummy in cookies
I think I am going to give the marchino cherrys a try. I think that might just do the trick. I don't know that they will be as sweet as the BC mix, but I have had no luck with their mix. I just started to get her to eat buttercream frosting, I don't want to mess with her favorite too much!!
Thank you all again for the help.

Wanna know something creepy? There are no acutal cherries (dried or otherwise) in Betty Crocker Cherry Chip mix! I looked up the ingredients. I think it's corn cereal dyed red. That's sick!
"Ingredients
Enriched Flour Bleached (Wheat Flour, Niacin, Iron, Thiamin Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid), Sugar, Partially Hydrogenated Soybean and/or Cottonseed Oil, Corn Starch, Propylene Glycol, Monoesters of Fatty Acids, Nonfat Milk, Baking Soda, Modified Corn Starch, Sodium Aluminum Phosphate, Salt, Distilled Monoglycerides, Dicalcium Phosphate, Corn Cereal, Corn Syrup, Dextrose, Soy Lecithin, Xanthan Gum, Monoglycerides, Datem, Artificial Flavor, Aluminum Sulfate, Citric Acid, Red 40 Lake."

I know!!! I looked on the ingredients panel, and was hoping to figure out what to use but no luck!! I also thought of a couple more things I might be able to use!! Anyone know about the sour cherry ball candies? I thought if I put them in the food processor that may work, or if I had some cherry flavoring, I could add it to sugars or sprinkles or something like that! What do you all think????
