I just got my first real paying job. The lady just ordered a cake from me for her grandsons 1st birthday party.

I asked her what she wanted and she said she didn't care. It just has to be white cake (any type of filling is fine) and good for a little boy. It will be for 20 people.

I asked her about what he likes and/or a theme and she said said she didn't know what he really liked. "Just boy stuff" and there was no real theme for the party. The invitation was just photos of him durning his first year of life.

She had no idea how much money she wanted to spend. She said to just tell her when I bring the cake to the party. It's my sister's good friend of over 30 years so I know she is good for the money.

So what do I do? What kind of cake would you guys do if you pretty much had free will to do what you wanted? Also, would you use a filling or just fill with buttercream?

I'm excited about doing this. I don't want to go to over board because I don't want it to cost an arm and a leg and have her die when I give her the price. But I also don't want a plain looking cake.

Please help! Any ideas would be great. Also prices. I have no idea what to charge.

Thanks a lot.
Joanne

Thanks for the ideas. I don't really want to do a cake with his picture on it though. THe only pictures I have are really tiny and would not blow up well. I want the cake to be a suprise for the parents so I don't want to ask for a picture.

Any more good ideas? I know CC has tons of people with super ideas and wonderful cakes.

Thanks guys.

I'd do a smash cake being he's just 1. And I'd also do something not too rich for it. My baby will be 1 in Feb. and I was thinking maybe a Bav. vanilla cream filling with a whipped cream icing b/c its mild. You don't want to give him a tummy ache. That's just my 2 cents. For the regular cake, eaten by adults, you could do any combo. The decorations on the cake will be more for the adults to see. At one year old, the baby doesn't care what it looks like. LOL!

I'll be making one for my grandson in March. I'm going to do a car themed cake -like the Cars movie. Or just transportation theme- cars, planes, trains, etc. Zoo animals are cute for that age too. My son is into cars, so that's why I'm going to do cars for the baby. Do you know what the father likes or hobbies he might have? Bright primary colors - balloons, etc. Have you done a search in the galleries for 1st boy birthdays? There are a lot of cute ones in there.

maybe do something to coordinate with his nursery........then you'll know for sure it's something the parents will like.......maybe you can find out what his bedding is and decorate a cake to match the bedding exactlly......but play around with it a little.....I did one that was a surprise to the mom to be....her mother gave me a carpet that matched the baby's nursery and I recreated the top of the cake to look exactlly like the rug and then on the sides I kinda made it a little more fun and played around using the exact same animals as on the carpet.......maybe something like that would work??

Well you guys gave me tons of great ideas. However, I just found out that the little one LOVES airplanes so I'm going to do something with a plane theme. I'm heading over to the gallery now to get some ideas.

Thanks again for all your help.

Hey there! Just in case the plane doesn't work out - I did a prince/crown cake for a one year old, and then the mini bear with a "king" outfit and crown for the smash cake - it was a big hit. Or you can do a Pooh cake - most one year olds like that. But if he likes planes, check out the one in my photos - I think that might be perfect for a one year old - I can send you directions if you'd like!

I saw this post late, but what about a Thomas the Tank Engine Cake. I made one for my brother years ago for his birthday. If you don't want to find the pan/carve the cake, you can decorate a sheet cake with grass/train tracks etc. and then buy the Thomas the train decorations to go on top. icon_rolleyes.gif

Cambo,

Thanks for the photo. I bought that deco pack and was going to use it as a pattern to make the wings and everything out of cake/fondant.

Great minds think alike huh? LOL
