from fondant? I guess I just cut decreasing size blocks and stack them, but that seems an awful waste! Is there any other way? I'm doing a Fairytale Castle wedding cake next weekend and the bride wants steps from the board going up the side of the first tier of the cake. Any help would be great - I'm hating every minute of doing this cake icon_cry.gif

Well, being a newbi, I do not know much, but I was thinking - bake a sheet cake and stack it to desired hight and width to reach the first tier, freeze, cut as stairs and decorate in fondant. Woila! thumbs_up.gif

PS. Have no idea whether this would work, but...

how big is the bottom tier?

could bake it 2 - 4 inches bigger than necessary and then cut the stairs right into the side of the tier.

Bottom is a 12in square, I can't fit anything larger than a 14in in my oven, and I don't think that 2in extra would be enough - besides too much extra cake batter will be wasted and they are getting this cake rock bottom price as it is (my own stupid fault for not working out the cost first!). I've made the carriage today and everything that could go wrong has gone wrong - I think that's because I really resent making this cake because I underpriced myself, and I don't really like the bride & groom (friends of a friend), they been complete bridezilla & groomzilla since they booked this cake back last September and I know whatever I do will be wrong anyway. Sigh, pass the gin please!

well, then, drgaddy's idea of cutting a sheet up and stacking would work.

are you insistent on the stairs being edible?

if not -- cardboard! -- fan fold it and then stretch out to make stair shape.

then cover in fondant or gumpaste.

if have time, gumpaste could be allowed to dry on the cardboard form and then placed against the cake.

You could just make blocks out of fondant, but why can't you make stairs just like you were making them in real life? Make 3 or 4 (depending on the width of the stairs) sides that would look just like the side view of the stairs, and then cut out the risers and the tops of the stairs, let everything dry and glue it together with gum glue. Would definately save fondant.

That sounds like an idea, until I remember the pastillage box I attenmpted to make yesterday - disaster! I think I'm going to have to go with the blocks of fondant/pastillage, as I can't really make anything until said cake is iced and ready (cos I have no idea how tall it'll end up being lol!). I love Dougs gumpaste stairs, but all my gumpaste has failed me miserably in the last few weeks, it's just too humid here and gumpaste will not dry out, or it does and then gets soft again icon_confused.gif !

Thanks for all your suggestions, I'm sure I'll muddle through somehow!

If you don't need them edible you can carve them out of styrofoam then cover with fondant. If you do want them edible make them out of rice krispie treats--be sure to make them with enough marshmallows to not be rock hard--then cover with fondant. HTH

Why not use gingerbread or sugar cookies? Use rectangular shapes and build the stairs that way. You could even stabilize it a bit more by pushing the steps into the side of your cake.

like I have them just laying around???

of course i whipped them up! -- no big deal (tho' I gotta learn to nuke MMF less so it's not burn your hands hot!)

and ya know --- handymama's suggestion of styrofoam sound's easiest of them all (tho' MorselsbyMark's cookies sound far more delicious!)
