Substitution For Applesauce In Vegan Cake?
Baking By kstgelais4 Updated 2 Sep 2006 , 4:36am by CakeDiva73

I need a substitute for applesauce in the vegan chocolate cake. Obviously it has to be a vegan ingredient. Can someone help me?
TIA!
Kelly

virtually any fruit-type baby food will work...as will whipped tofu, veggie mayonaise( no egg) or ground flax seed

Is apple a no, no for vegans ?
I didn't realize Apple is bad for vegetarians. wow !

A few years back, there was a product that was advertised as a replacement for oil in baked goods, and it was basically pureed prunes. It worked well, and especially in chocolate cake, there was no difference in taste from using oil. I don't know if they still sell it or not. It seems to me that it was a Sunsweet brand product.
Baby food prunes would be just about the same thing. I would think pureed pears would as well, since pears and apples have similar textures and tastes.
I'm sure there's a reason you don't want to use the apples - if you share the reason, it may be easier for people to suggest other things.
hth!
Laura.

I'm assuming there is another reason for not using the applesauce, other than a vegan related issue? Because applesauce is vegan.
I'd recommend taking some aspetic packaged silken tofu, whizzing it up in a blender. Make sure you get it nice and whizzed so there aren't any chunks.

lol... no, I didn't mean because the apple wasn't vegan. It is because the customer is allergic to it. sorry for the confusion, and thank you for the ideas guys!

They sell this funky stuff in the baking department that is for low-fat yada yada... I have never used it but I sub 1/2 the applesauce for oil in my carrot cake..... OY! I hate allergies : )
