I have found the perfect way around the health department! Make your cakes out of ceramics! Ok, maybe not so appetizing, but, its made my life a lot easier! I made all of these are made with polymer clay, yummy!

They are just wonderful! What's polymer clay? (Is this Fimo? I'm in the UK so don't have access to all the same stuff you do) Someone in the UK makes these and you can send a photo of your wedding cake and they'll make you a miniature - are you doing that? I'd love to know how you make these, I think they're just gorgeous.

Those are so cute! I had previosuly thought of making cakes out of polymer clay but I couldn't figure out how I was going to do borders. You definitely have inspired me now. What do you use to get the shine? Do you have to bake polymer or can you air dry it?

I've worked with polymer clay previously quite a bit (not to make gorgeous cakes with though!) It comes in small pre-coloured blocks - you can mix them to make new colours. They start fairly tough and then the warmth of your hand and working the blocks makes them soften up like plasticine. You stick the bits together just by pressing them together - no glue needed, and then bake them in an ordinary oven. If you left them just to air dry they would only be like hard plasticine - and could still be squashed fairly easily. You can varnish them with clear nail varnish or stuff you can buy specifically for the job.

I'm interested in the colour effects you have on the cakes - how did you get the mottled look on the 'cherry' cake - have you painted them, if so - what with? Can you paint them with lustre dusts?

The name brand of the stuff I use is called Sculpey Oven bake clay, I buy 8 lbs of it at a time and with the Micheals 40% off coupon, it costs around 30.00, not too bad. But, Im not sure of they sell it in the UK! So, yeah, you do have to bake it, but it is very easy to work with, kinda like fondant. To get the effect on the cherry cake, I kinda mixed colors together, and blotted the paint until I got the effect I wanted. To get the shiny effect, I use a shiny varnish, its comes in a spray can. You guys should try it out, lots of fun! Im posting my latest cake! Check out my website if you get a chance, all the stuff on there was made with the sculpey clay as well!
