If you decide to do cupcake bee hives instead please take a look in the gallery and see the one I did. I used tootsie rolls to make the bees.
Hope my cupcakes can help!

Oh! I just saw this really amazing bee hive and bees in a CP book. Wait, I'll get it......

Ok, yep, Colette Peters. Colette's Birthday Cakes, Busy Beehive, p. 127. Really amazing with this piped floral "cage" sitting over it and the bees sticking out on white cloth-covered wires. I can't wait to try this one myself!

I'm glad I saw this thread. I am going to be making a cake for a bee baby shower I am throwing for a really good friend Aug 4th. Although I think I have my design down I will be watching to see ideas. I only need enough for 30 people but want a 3 tiered cake so mine will be feeding a lot more.

Williams & Sonoma has a great bee hive shaped pan. it is worth checking out. My step mom says they also sell bee candies, but I have not seen the candies.
I made bees & bugs for my son's birthday cake. If you look up bugs & bees under the search function, you will find a lot of inspiration.

I'm rather new to cake decorating & my bees & bugs were the first characters I have shaped.... I should have made them days before & I made mine with rolled buttercream... probably not the best medium but my son loved them icon_smile.gif

Good luck!!!!

Here's one I did for my sister's baby shower.

Funny thing about this one - NOBODY, including me, realized that thebees were missing their wings! icon_biggrin.gif

I, too, am doing a bumble bee themed baby shower cake for a coworker (the nursery theme is bumble bees). I've done a bee hive cake before as a going away cake for someone my mom works with. I'm just trying to think of something perhaps a little different then just the hive. I'll check back to see if there are any more ideas. icon_smile.gif

I think this cake would be cute...it's a "beehive cake" -I'm sure the servings could be accomodated -if you add either 1 or 2 larger cake layers at the bottom of the base pan. As pictured the cake would serve 10-12 people.

Image

Basic items needed

cake (either box/scratch whichever is preferred)
yellow tinted frosting
3 - 5 bumble bees (can be found at most arts & craft stores)
1 oreo cookie (2-1/2 inches)
6-oz. custard cup
10-oz custard cup
1-1/2-qt. round baking dish.

Basic assembly:
Pour 1/3 cup batter into the 6-oz. cup,
Pour 1 cup batter into the 10-oz. cup and pour the remaining batter into the baking dish.
Bake the small cake at 350° for 30-35 minutes, the medium cake for 40-45 minutes and the large cake for 55-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool for 15 minutes before removing from dishes to wire racks to cool completely.
Place large cake on a serving plate; spread with frosting. Top with medium cake; frost. Add small cake; frost top and sides of entire cake.
Position chocolate wafer at the base for the entrance.

I don't have a picture or anything to show you but I do have an idea. I think if you did a honeycomb cake with a mother and father bee hugging overlooking their baby bee with a pamper and his stinger sticking out in the crib. That would be cute!

I did a bumble bee cake...they wanted an actual bee. Nothing fantastic but I thought it was cute and they loved it. Details a little crazy. I used the whole cake as my canvas. There's clouds on the other side of the bee and a smiling worm underneath in some dirt.

Hope that wasnt too big. Ooopsie, forgot the worm...
I thought I had a close up but you can see the eyes and he's smiling. Flowers on both sides. This is the lady bug pan with a 1/4 I believe (could be wrong) but a 1/2 would do great (especially if I'm wrong LOL). Just an idea...wanted to help.

Thanks

i like the debbie brown design (the last poster on the first page showed a picture of her recreation of it) is really really cool. i have the book and if you are interested, i can snap photos and pm you the instructions. you can change the measurements to get a cake to accomodate the number of servings you need.

i also know of the colette peters beehive cake mentioned on the first page. that however, takes some patience, and good piping skills. especially to make a cake large enough for 50 servings. the cage would be fragile. i dont have the book in front of me, but i believe that the original design is small so the cage wouldnt be as challenging. however, i am sure it can be done. it has, in my opinion, a more sophisticated look, but if done well, would be very striking. if you'd like, i can also pm you the photo.

another idea that i really like is using chocolate transfers. the whimsical bakehouse book shows great instruction for that, as well as a great template for bumblebees. they do some great cakes with multi color, iced cake sides (the bc colors blend...nice effect.) and to use maybe blue and green with that method, then adding the chocolate transfer bees would be very cute. the cake i am thinking of from that book is actually a dragonfly design, but you could just replace them with the bees.

i've got all the books i mentioned, and if you are seriously interested, please let me know and i'll email you photos.
