I am making a spiced Bee hive cake, and I believe all decorations on cakes should be ediable. I was going to make the bees with fondant (I have not tried gumpaste yet and not ready for it) but I am not sure what to make the wings out of? Any suggestions.

could you just roll the fondant very thin? when I did my beehive, I cheated. the only nonedible thing on the cake were the bee's wings. I cut them out of almost sheer white ribbon.

You could cut them out of gelatin sheets, the kind a chef would use.

That sounds really cute. Make sure to post it once you make it.

I'm kinda of a newbie too, so I may not be able to help much, but what about using white chocolate for the wings. I know it wouldn't be clear, but maybe you could put some sparkles or shimmer dust on it?

I've heard of people using gelatin before, but I thought you had to use a wire around the edges to support it. Maybe search thru the posts.

Good luck!

First I wanted to say if you can use Fondant you can use gumpaste. It is worked with the same way. Only it is much much nicer to work with. It will roll thinner and dries faster. I'm sure you will love it. Give it a go.

I saw someones cake and they had bees. They used the gelatin and it was darling.

You could follow the directions on CC for the gelatin flowers, only make the shapes like wings instead of petals.....just a thought.....and, the bonus is, you can color them yellow and black with the gelatin!

Gelatin sheets, also called leaf gelatine, are clear and look like cellophane. You can use them by dissolving them in water to use as regular gelantin in a recipe. But people who make gingerbread houses often use them to make the windows...they just cut the sheets to the size they need. The sheets have a diamond pattern. That is why I think they would work well for your bee wings icon_smile.gif Here is a link where you can get them:

I'd love to see the cake when you are finished, no matter what you choose to use for the wings. Btw, white chocolate is a great idea too, fourangelsmommie thumbs_up.gif

You can also use caramelized sugar.

I trying to make the bee's also. I bought some almond slices and thought I might try to paint them yellow. I have to have them for Sept. 23 so maybe I will order the gelatin sheet. Please post a picture if you can.

Are you using angel hair pasta to make them look like they are flying above the cake? (got that idea from the Cake Bible)
