Anyone have any ideas on how to give royal icing some texture? I'm decorating some beaver cookies (family reunion at a campground) and I want to ice them in royal. However, I wonder if there's a way to make the beaver fur look a little more realistic? Thoughts?

You could try first flooding a smooth coat of royal over the cookie. When that dries, use a pastry brush and a thicker consistency of royal icing to "dab" the icing onto the cookie with a straight-up-and-down motion. Not sure if that's what you're wanting, but it's cute on teddy bear cookies for fur.

For texture you could also dab the wet royal icing with a big dry paint brush, which would give the icing a lift to look like fur. this is a technique that I saw on Sugar Rush from the owner of Rolling Pin Productions. She has a website...www.rollingpinproductions.com. HTH.

you could also use the same cutter to cut out a piece of fondant and place it on the cookie while still warm so it sticks. then take royal icing on a sponge (those disposable make up sponges work great) and dab the surface. that takes the step out of waiting for the first layer of royal icing to dry. ...just an idea

that sounds like it would work well

I couldn't find a picture of the bears, but I did find a wedding cake by angken5330 that has a texture similar to what you'd get doing the dabbing motion with the royal:
