What's The Difference In Taste Between A Yellow And A White

cake? Can anyone help me out here? Don't they taste the same? Will I be able to dye yellow cake batter pink or am I better off sticking with a white mix? Help!

Yellow cake to me, has a richer vanilla and butter taste.
White cake doesn't taste like a lot to me, it's a really delicate flavor. It's great when you have a really yummy frosting or filling. And it's white color will be much easier for you to control the color you want if you're adding food color.

Traditional white cake is made with egg whites only and ofcourse yellow cake is made with whole eggs. The yellow cake, therefore, would have a richer taste and the white cake should be a lighter taste. I personally make my white cake with whole eggs, because I like the taste better, and it's not totally white but definately lighter than my yellow. If you are planning on coloring your batter, though, I would definately use your white cake recipe. At least that way you know you'll get the truest color possible. Hope that helps.

I agree with everyone about the yellow cake being more flavorful. You might also want to know because white cake traditionally is made with egg whites only, it is better for those who have a dietary issues with cholesteral (sp). It is better calorie wise as well.

Ok why would you dye a white cake pink if I have seen strawberry cake mix why not use that? Do you not do that cause you want the taste of the white cake without the strawberry flavor or do you do it if you can't find strawberry cake mix.

A lot of times people will dye the batter for a baby shower cake or to match the theme of the party or just a neat surprise when you cut the cake. Myself I would never eat a strawberry flavored cake-I love strawberries just not strawberry flavored things-weird I know-same way about bannanas!

dodibug, ME TOO nothing strawberry or banana FLAVORED, but I love both fruits. that articifical taste is nasty to me.

Thanks for all the info! Okay, white it is then! I need a pink colored cake fora baby shower but with a vanilla taste not strawberry. Hopefully the white cake will turn out tasty with the key lime filling and vanilla buttercream! Thanks again for all your tips!

I've done this often, and can tell you from grueling experience that the pink will turn a really disgusting orange if your cake is too yellow!!! Learned by doing on some peaches and cream cakes that I wanted to come out a lovely peach color. I ended up squirtine (pouring???) in a goo dbit of Wilton white icing color, then going for the peach. It seemed to work, but obviously is not the best solution!
