hey I have a great carrot cake recipe that I use with or without modifications all the time now- and my family demands well ok asks for it frequently. http://cake.allrecipes.com/az/AwsmCrrtCCFrstng.asp (in fact I'm going to be making it this morning lol) - when I first started making it I cut the sugar in half and that's what everyone likes- if you like sweet sweeter than do the recipe as is. I'm sure it tastes 'normal' lol- our family just doesnt like super sweet I guess lol anyway there's an idea for the inside

She is like me only Better ..My mom is truly amazing...she can cook..(Boy can she) Bake..she runs her own wedding cake business..Yes..she is a decorater too!! She can floral arrange,Sew...Decorate her home,Fashionable dressed...I just want to make a special cake!!
Oh boy now I am sounding Teary eyed!!!

LMAO that's adorable! ok can I borrow your mom for a while? LMAO ok I love my mom she just doesnt bake or do any of that stuff- never did-only thing she baked when I was a toddler (before they split and I lived with my dad) was heavy duty german rye bread.
Ok so back to your mom hmmmm good lord the possibilities are endless- you could stick with one of those themes or do like I did with an anniversary cake last month and have little bits of each- I did mini chocolate transfers of all the things my friend was into (doubled birthday/anniversary cake)
so you could have a little sewing machine or a pin cushion. and a pair of matching boots and purse say, some flowers, little bottles of food colouring or a bag of cake flour, or some mini cookies,
ok you know how at christmas you make gift baskets for people and you can personalize them? How about making a basket and then laying these or some of these things (larger than what I had originally in mind) inside the basket- could either be utensils/items she'd need for all of her hobbies- like the pincushion and baking supplies/floral arranging supplies/ etc, or could be the actual products of - so a few cookies, some flowers etc. You'd think of something, the kind of things she makes/decorates at home
ok other idea is a stack of magazines, off kilter a bit so you can see the different ones, or just one visible with the cover - Better homes and gardens say- and FBCT some scene on there that is personalized, either some part of your mom's house/garden, or else maybe even a pic of her in front of her house or whatever pic of her you have., and then lettering on top of that like you have on a magazine cover, with article subjects to do with sewing and fashion and decorating and cake deco and floral arranging and whatever else. and one of the articles could read 'happy birthday, mom' (The main cover story)

Sounds like a great family!
How about a teapot vase with her favorite colors. You could have Mom written in gold luster dust on the teapot and her favorte flowers out of fondant/gumpaste in a cluster coming from the top center of the teapot?
Love the carrot cake idea as a base!
I'm certain she'll love what you decide to make and the love behind it!

Your mom sounds great!
My mom, I don't know what we would of done without her... With her being German, cooking was something we never had to worry about. She had it all covered... Anything we wanted she was able to whip it up..And she never had recipes for anything she made .. Now I wish I had some SourKraut and Smoked Pork Chops ... I truely don't know how she kept up with the three of us...
I love the tea pot idea, that sounds like something for a wonderful mom...
Good Luck again on your quest!
Cass

Damn ya for mentioning saurkraut funny thing is my parents are both German and we never grew up eating German food- well after my folks split, we didnt. I only got dumplings and saurbraten at my aunt's house in Germany lol. Recipes? What are those lol. I tried to make dumplings from a recipe and well yeah lets just say the end product was potato soup LOL
I wonder the same thing though re keeping up- but my mom and dad went and had twins (me and my sis) after the 3 older kids- can you imagine? ACK @ 5 kids LOL

Hi Cindy-
I've been looking for a good Cream Cheese Icing... Yours crust also! That would be perfect for someone wanting something different... I assume you would need to keep the cake refrigerated.... Thanks in Advance

Thanks,

GEEE it's not 830AM and I'm jonesing to make perogies HAHAHA- you had to mention Ukrainian- the ex of one of my sisters is Ukrainian and his mom shared her special perogy recipe with my sis cause he loved those- so she taught me how to make them- OMGGGG these are like little orgasms in the mouth I swear (not gettin strange I swear LOL) but they melt in the mouth- like nothing I've tasted- heck you dont even need sour cream :O ANd until I made/tasted those I would have thought anyone crazy to suggest not putting sour cream on perogies LOL
darnit, 2 cakes to make- no time to make perogies (and no room on the counter with cake stuff going on this week LOL)

Sounds like you've had the same experiences with wonderful food as I did growing up. Guess I could of gotten my spelling right on the Saurkraut ...
I'm Lucky though, not only is my mom German but my MIL is also....But she hates to cook which is unbelievable coming from a German... She took the whole family to Germany a few years back and I just wanted to stay... I have to say Breakfast was my favorite meal, never have I seen so much fresh food... I ate like a horse for two weeks!
I'm so hungry now! Those Peorgies sound great! Never tried them though...

LOL I think we're in the wrong thread here HAHAHA- good lord I do German breakfasts a lot- with guests, even on my own, but smaller scale LOL- the kind that last 2 hours- good roast coffee, a few cheeses, boiled eggs, a few kinds of rye and other 'healthy' breads (ie not Wonderbread type lol) and rolls and Nutella (have to have Nutella) and haggebuten marmelade (rosehip jam OMG YUM) and my grandmother used to always have fresh strawberries and cream- uhhhhh
ok stop
i'll dig up my perogies recipe and send it to ya- it's a wee bit labour intensive (ie not picking up Cheemos at the freezer section and boiling LOL) but they're SO worth it (double or triple at least the recipe cause they'll be all eaten otherwise lmao)
ummmm yeah my mom is definitely not 'german' that way lol- she only cooked when they were married cause she had to I think- since I was 6 (not living with her) she got into eating mostly vegetarian- sprouts and millet and cooked veggies, and then eating whatever we eat at dinner cause our food tastes better LOL- but defnitely not where I get my inspiration from in the creative department LOL
ok I think I have to make perogies this week even if that means forgetting about sleep LMAO

Oceanspitfire- I would love your recipe! Please send it when you have a free moment
Laurel- Sorry to veer of the beaten path of your thread! I hope some of the ideas you are getting help you out.... I've got to find something to eat now, I'm starving after all of this...

Okay, do you think you could make a "perogie cake"? This doesn't have anything to do with hobbies, but with heritage. You could put the cake as the "guts" of the perogie, this could maybe be a 6" round, since it isn't for many people, then the pasta part could be MMF? with a cream cheese frosting holding the MMF in place? I bet she's NEVER seen that!!

LMAO @ you, that sounds like an idea I woudl get- but hey as long as I'm awake, I seem to want to make cake out of anything I see )
OMG I can so see that working- my brain is working now and I already have my own projects to work on tonight LOL FOCUS ME FOCUS! ok and you could in fact serve it with sour cream, maybe sweeten that with a bit of CS LOL I'm just envisioning the reaction of a traditional Ukrainian housewife's reaction to getting a perogy cake for her birthday LOL I think her eyes would pop out of their sockets.

Sorry I'm acronym-disabled.....does LMAO @ mean a good thing? It seems like it does, but I can't quite figure it out, and I have a deep need to be considered "hip", so...could you please enlighten me?

It would be a REALLY good thing if it were literal LOL- LMAO means laughing my ass off-

hello Kiddiekakes
if you mom is into sewing, what about making a measuring tape out of fondant; use an edible pen to mark the lines (even half inch or so), Place the tape up, down around the cake (ending at top center) & then either decorate at different intervals along the tape with icing (fbct) or add a chocolate transfer to highlight milestones & her hobbies. You end at the top with a sparkly MOM (the theme being that she measures up)
For the cake, go for something totally different; I recently did a hazelnut cake for a 25ht anniversary (it was a big hit); or try a banana cake, or walnut cake, or how does a cinnamon tea cake sound?
how this gives you some new thougths.
ciao

oceanspitfire: Thanks....I think it would be a cool idea! Who says everything needs to be serious, anyway?
