From a post about Grooms Cakes, people kept mentioning the armadillo groom's cake in the movie Steel Magniolas. Well, lucky me! Steel Magniolas was on my tv network "Comcast ... On Demand" and I watched it, saw the armadillo cake which I was looking for; but I had to go out and when I left the movie, Shelby was in a coma. I tuned into "On Demand" today thinking I could watch the rest of it and found that the movie is no longer available as of today! I'm so bummed!

What happened?

Speakikng of Weezer. I have an comment about her involving irony. Why would a person who won't wear a smile for free keep spending money at a beauty parlor?

Hey guys! Steel Magnolia's was filmed in my hometown!! Natchitoches, Louisiana!!! It's also called the City of Lights. IF you ever get a chance to come visit you gotta!! It's the oldest town in Louisiana. All the houses in the movie are still there & we have always had that Christmas Festival that was on the movie. It's really big here! It's beautiful!! You can take a horse & carriage ride through all the places that were in the movie. Very romantic too! Just thought I'd brag a little about my town!! icon_smile.gif

PS... the movie was filmed in the middle of the summer! The actors liked to have died in the heat we have here!

One of the best movies I have ever watched. I agree. Lots and lots of tissues for the end. Wheezer was one of my favorite characters and wasn't it the Dukakis woman's character that told her to hit Wheezer? I'm almost positive it was. At any rate it was a funny and sad part of the movie.

Wheezer kept going to the beauty shop for the gossip and friendships she had there. Kinda like being on CC. icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

i was thinking the same thing about the Dukakis woman being the one that told her to hit Wheezer,, its definitely one of the "keepers" to watch any time.. my teenage girls love it.

That's interesting! Being from Massachusetts where we have very cold winters, I find it hard to watch people at a Christmas festival without coats on!

Steel Magnolias was the first movie I ever paid to rent. Sent my daughter after it and had a gang of women over to watch it. We all cried. Have watched it over and over on TV since then.

Only other movie I have rented (and the only one I personally went to the video store and rented) was The Green Mile. Purchased it later to watch over and over along with Forest Gump.

Funny that no matter how many times I watch good movies, I see something in them that I didn't catch before.

I never see dyed eggs that I don't think of all those smashed eggs in the trunk of the car. When I hear the words grooms cake I automatically think of an armadillo and Wheezer.

Diane, I had read the book "the green mile" before it became a movie. I was totally engrossed in it! I was telling my son (who was a teenager) a lot about the book. One day he saw a preview of the movie and said, "Ma, I think this is the book you were telling me about!" I was so excited ... especially to see it starred Tom Hanks! I MADE my husband go with me and we took my son too. We are not movie-goers; and my husband asked how long it would be! (I said I didn't know ... but I knew the book was extremely long!) If he had known before-hand how long it was, he wouldn't have gone.

There were a couple of things in the book that were not in the movie that helped prove Coffey was the wrong guy. I'll pm you.

Don't worry. I read the book first. I thought the book was better than the movie by far but the movie was darn good also. I didn't think the guy who played the Cajun in the movie was "Cajun" enough. I wanted to kill Percy with my bare hands.............

Steel Magnolia's was a great movie but my all time favorite is Ya-Ya!! Olympia Dukakus (sp) is in that too. Love her! I always watch it when I'm feeling bad. My son has caught me banging the phone on the counter top a few times too!! It relieves so much anger!! icon_smile.gif LOL!! Another all time favorite is Fried Green Tomatoes! Loved that movie!!

In Steel Magnolia's they did wear coats in the Christmas scenes... all the stars complained & complained. Well all but Dolly, she fit right in!

Have ya'll ever seen Man in the Moon? It was filmed in my home town too. Awesome love story. Try story too. If you haven't seen it you should. Reece Witherspoon stared in it with Jason London.

I love this movie, especially when the Dad is shooting the gun to scare the plethera of birds and wheezer comes with fists full of dog hair. I also love when she cuts him th epiece of armidillo @##. I cry every time I watch this, and I'm not a girly-girl. It's even harder to watch if you have kids, now I just think of the movie and want to laugh and cry at the same time. Go and rent it...you won't regret it!

Yea, I would say that you stopped watching about the time the waterworks start...

And they pretty much go on for the rest of the movie.

All this talk and I am going to have to dig it out and watch it again. Am out of tissues so I'll grab a roll of paper towels. icon_lol.gif

Loved the Ya Ya Sisters also. Thanks for mentioning Olympia's name. I could not, for the life of me, remember anything but Dukakis.

Another good one was Bridges of Madison County. Good book and good movie. What sob sisters we are..............

Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep. Author of the book is Robert James Waller and it was wonderful also. He's a great story teller.

I too am a big fan of Steel Magnolia's. The scene that gets me the most is after Shelby dies and her mom asks "Where's Jack Jr.?" and Jackson says "He's at Aunt Frans.(?) and then she drives to Aunt Fran's(?) to pick him up and little Jack Jr comes running to her and she picks him up. I am tearing up just thinking about it. It is so sad that as many times as I have seen that movie, that I cannot think of the aunt's name.

Yes, I was going to mention Notebook. Although the movie was very good, the book was better. It was written by a man, Nicholas Sparks, who also wrote several other good books.
