One of my staff is leaving for college on Friday. She's going to be a music major - planning to be a band director. I have only been at this job a week. I barely know the girl. But, she has been my "teacher" and savior in a couple of situations. I owe her, big time! I was planning to do the obvious - use a music theme somehow. But, thought I'd run this by the creative minds here to see if anybody has any "going away to college" ideas. This is her first year of college - she's fresh out of high school.

Ideas???

how about making the cake the top half of a music stand? And tailor the music on the music book - title of the song would be Good luck or Bon voyage, (see sketch)- or if you have a bit of a message, make one side the 'good luck' title (or whatever title you want), with the sheet music notation and then on the other page, right your message. Oh and the long black 'stick' across on an angel is the conductor's wand - could make that out of fondant or gumpaste or something.

How about making a cake that looks like a drum majors hat. You can stack some cakes and color it in the schools colors and make a feather plume out of fondant or gumpaste and the bling you can color with gold dusting powders you know the chain and the studs n such. I think it would look kewl.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I'm going to concentrate on flavor and keep the decoration pretty simple. Her primary instrument is flute. I designed the graphic below for a 10 inch square. There will be an inch border all around the edible image, which I'll outline in either small shells or a snailtrail. All white buttercream. Not sure what I'm going to do with the cake and filling. I may make some white chocolate notes and brush them with silver luster dust and scatter those on the side. Not sure about that. I'll have to see how they look.
