Hey everyone!! I'm new to this board and so far am finding lots of great ideas. I am a self taught decorator and am only experienced with buttercream. I am needing some ideas for a cake for this weekend. It's my grandmother's 80th birthday and we are giving her a surprise birthday party. I want this cake to be extra special. My sister is working on it also, but she does cake less often than I do. This needs to feed probably around 100 people so any suggestions on size would also be appreaciated. Thanks for your help!!

Thanks for the welcome!! I am actually wanting to do a tiered cake I think. I'm really not sure. I've got round (6", 8", 10" 12") and square (4", 6", 8", 10", 12", 4", 16"). I also have one heart pan not sure on the size, but it holds one cake mix. My sheet pan is 11x15. However, I could do just sheet cakes if I ended up with an awsome design. Thanks for any advice you may have!

I just did a tiered cake for a 30th birthday. The girl was recently divorced so she wanted something special and for colors they just said to go "girly". This was the first time I tried doing the melted chocolate name. It was lots of fun. Course I had to try it three times before I could get one that didn't break!

6-10-14 or 12-14 square would be about 100.

an idea:
16" square on bottom
12" circle next
and then the heart on top -- would look really neat if propped up at a slight angle.

that size round and square would just do a tad over 100.

if up for it. could use the heart to make a candy melt plaque instead of a cake (melt candy melts and pour into pan, allow to harden and then tak out...) this would be light enough to easily prop up and could write message on it.

if can do roses, cascade roses down sides.

if doing fondant, diamond pattern w/ pearls on one of the tiers or both.

I just did a berthday cake for my aunt's 85th surprise birthday party too! I also had to feed around 100 people. My aunt likes bright colors, and flowers, so I came up with a tiered polka dot cake and used silk flowers( I didn't have time to do gum past flowers or anything, so I opted for the silk ones...sheap AND easy!) It was a showy cake because of the color combinations, and I got TONS of compliments, and even orders for more cakes from people at the party! Here is a pic of my cake I made.

What about doing themes from 1926? I'm afraid I didn't look up anything in particular, but maybe check newspapers and historical references? You could do fashion on one tier, news on another and maybe pop culture on the third. It wouldn't have to be elaborate.....news headlines, catch phrases, etc.

Good luck, and please post a picture!

and if up for a whimsy challenge: ( Whimsical Cake Tutorial )

#1 -- all three slant same way.

#2 -- reverse slants each layer

#3 -- bottom two reverse slant each other, heart 90 degree turn toward front.

Not sure if you are up for this...but...

Here is what I am planning for my grandma's 93rd birthday next month:

2 tiered, round

Fondant accents to do a "timeline"...she was born in 1913, so I am gonna have things representing the different decades...flapper dress, women's right to vote, prohibition ends, WW2, bride's dress, her four boys (1940's), a poodle skirt, monopoly game, etc. Here is a good link that gave me a timeline with ideas...

Good luck! I am really excited to do my cake!
