How about baking the cake in a wonder mold pan. Or if you don't have a wondermold a deep oven safe bowl and do a minimal amount of sculpting.

i mad a volcano by bakeing the wonder mold as well as a round. Stack them, carve a hole out of the top for the opening of the volcano and them cover in MMF, creating crevasis and cracks all around. Then i placed a bunch of long sparklers in the top and when it was lite, it looked great

I did a volcano cake a couple years ago. When i did was baked the cake in a glass oven-proof bowl (Pyrex). Since I was going to make an erupting cake, I put a clean empty shot glass that has been sprayed with cooking spray on the outside of the glass upside down in the bottom of the bowl and filled the bowl with cake batter and baked the cake. After the cake is baked and cooled, I pulled the cake out of the bowl and pulled out the shot glass. After I frost the cake, I filled the hole with part of the mixture and when the cake was ready to serve, I filled the hole with the remaining mixture and the cake erupted with a red foamy concoction. The kids at the party really liked it.

I have a volcano in my photos. I got it from Woman's Day Magazine.

I have seen a pic with the candles pushed down into the top like veronelly is talking about. It looks like fire shooting out of the top-so cool! Can't wait till my little man likes dinosaurs!

Hi! I have done 2 volcano cakes. Both I have baked in the Pampered Chef small bowls. I used candy melts in red and yellow so that it would look like lava was running out. Then I used really thick buttercream to do shooting flames.

I hope this helps! Debra

I have never done one, but I would definitely use the wondermold pan. It's a worthwhile investment for about $15.00 because it makes such beautiful doll cakes! If you live near an AC Moore, you can get a 40% off coupon on line and get it for 40% off!

Here's a coupon good until July 27th.
