
Hi everyone,
I was wondering what cool whip is? I wanted to try one of the filling recipes on this site but I am not sure what it is - is it like thickened cream that you use for whipping or something else altogether? Where would I find it? would it be in the Supermarket in the dairy section? Is it only sold in the USA?
If anyone can help that would be great .Thanks

Cool Whip is a brand of imitation whipped cream with < 2% milk product content, called a "whipped topping" by its manufacturer. It is used as a dessert topping, and in some no-bake pie recipes.
Cool Whip was introduced in 1965 by the Birds Eye division of General Foods, which later merged with Kraft Foods and Philip Morris, and was later re-named Altria Group, Inc. Within two years of introduction, it became the largest and most profitable product in the Birds Eye line of products.
Cool Whip technology was invented by Tommy Finucane, a scientist at the Tarrytown Laboratories of General Foods. The key to the technology was the creation of a whipped cream-like product that could be distributed in a frozen state by General Foods and grocery chains and kept in the refrigerator by the housewife. This had never been done before and represented a major breakthrough in food preservation.
It is sold in 8 oz and larger plastic tubs and is distributed through grocery outlets in a frozen state, and is refrigerated in the home prior to serving. Each nine gram serving provides 25 calories of which 15 are from fat.
Compared to genuine whipped cream, it has:
a longer shelf life;
low dairy content
a "spongy" texture and chemical aftertaste
Ingredients
Cool Whip is made of water, corn syrup and high fructose corn syrup, partially hydrogenated coconut and palm kernel oil, < 2% sodium caseinate, natural and artificial flavorings, xanthan and guar gums, polysorbate 80, sorbitan monostearate, and beta carotene.[1] Sodium caseinate is a milk protein, so Cool Whip may be unacceptable to those avoiding dairy products for medical, ethical, or religious reasons.



I know we have Cool Whip here in Canada. I'm not sure if they sell it elsewhere....

I just looked on Kraft.com (makers of cool-whip) and they have brands listed under United States, Canada, and International. It is not an international brand right now. It is only sold in Canada and the US it looks like. According to their corporate website.
I did some searchingon the internet and can't finda comparable recipe That I can recommend. Sorry

Cool whip seems gross, with its "chemical aftertaste" and unusually long shelf life, it can't be good for you.
My cute little grandmother bought it one day thinking that it was like whipped cream, well when she got it home and read the ingredients she changed her mind about it. For some reason, instead of throwing it away or washing it down the sink, she tried to flush it down the toilet!
She called my mother to tell her that the chemical filled stuff wouldn't even flush down the toilet.
He he, cute grandma.

Sorry, I forgot to say there is another product similar to cool whip on the marked that you have to whip yourself, but that is basically the same. I think its called nutrifill.

Okay, so I just sat down to the computer after giving my kids their dessert of strawberries and fat-free cool whip...how weird to see this thread. That is a funny story about grandma, but I think it is so weird because I would have to say that there are sooo many other things out their that are much worse for you than poor old cool whip! Uh, lets say, buttercream??
