I used my luster dust to paint the top tier of my purple cake but if you have a look, it just came out a dark purple and there is no shine / sparkle to it. I was just wondering what I'm doing wrong. I'm mixing about 2 parts luster dust to 1 part or less vodka. Is this wrong? When I rolled the little balls I made on the 2nd tier they came out nice and shiny but the same didn't happen when I painted it on to the whole cake. Is there a specific way to apply luster dust over a larger area?

Ok, first of all I think the cake looks great!!

But I have found with the darker colors, such as red, purple, etc.. you have to give them a few coats of luster dust. Let them dry completly, then go back once or twice....

Hope that helps...

I haven't used darker colors, so I'm not sure. Maybe you accidentally used petal dust instead?

If it doesn't shine, you probably used petal dust rather than luster dust.

Maybe it is too dry? Not sure. I never measure how much I use. If you use too much liquid it's too thin and you don't get enough dust on the cake, but if you use too little liquid, it's almost like dry brushing which doesn't get as much of a shine. Try adding an extra coat, and make sure to get a good wet but not completely liquid consistency to your mix.

Thank you guys so much. It's definately luster dust, that's what it said on the box and jar. Next time I'll try giving it two coats and not making it as runny as I had it. I think the vodka was a little too much.
