
Has anyone used the Wilton Ready To Use Icing? I'm planning on using it this weekend when I make a one layer 16" square cake. I know that you can loosen it with water and stiffen it with confectioner's sugar, but does anyone have any other tips on using it? Thanks

I would suggest just making the butter cream yourself...it's super quick and will cost you just about as much as buying a can. Plus, it will taste sooooo much better. Just a suggestion.
If you are going to buy it, it is medium- stiff consistency already (adding powdered sugar won't make much of a diff).


I agree. It is much less expensive to make your own and it will taste so much better. I personally don't like the ready to use frosting,I found it much harder to decorate with & get the correct consistancy.

Are you referring to the new 5 lb. tub?

I'm with everyone else, I'd make my own .. I don't care for the taste of Wilton's icing at all .. and just a note, their fondant is even worse!

On another discussion forum people have said the icing is a thin and it never crusts over. The taste is good, but it's not good for decorating. You have to add powdered sugar to thicken it, so you might be better off making you own.

The new 5 lb tub is a medium consistency and does crust. I am a do it yourself gal, but was pleasantly surprised.

You think maybe they're talking about the whipped icing mix cause the stuff in the small tubs is hard. Can't barely get a spoon through it to get it out and it crusts.

I haven't seen that yet. Round here, it's $2 just for the small tub. When I used it last, I microwaved it a bit and poured it over a cake. I was in a hurry--LOL!

on a side note...I picked up a tube of wilton's icing...in black because I needed a bit of black...BAD idea! The stuff is so disgusting! I can't believe they even put out stuff like that and call it edible.

Thanks for all of your replies. I really wanted to make a homemade frosting, like a buttercream, but this woman is really set on having store-bought frosting. I've made other cakes with homemade frosting, and she eats the cake, but not the frosting! So I figured, if I have to use a store-bought frosting, this would probably be the easiest to work with, right?

well if she wants a store bough frosting i think wiltons would be my last choice. I would go to the grocery store and get pillsbury or something. If it is store bought that she is ued to, i really dont think she will like wiltons. Just a thought.

I agree. Wilton's doesn't taste anything like the other brands. If she likes store-bought, she may not like it. You can add powdered sugar to some of the other brands to use them to decorate with or just ice the cake with them and do your decorations with the Wilton.

Store bought worked fine for me. I didn't know how to make buttercream when I started reading the Wilton forums while looking for ideas on my groom's cake. All I could comprehend was that I needed to make sure it was a little stiffer than most canned frostings on the cake aisle. I added a bit of powdered sugar to make it get that crusting effect and it turned out fine. I even used WalMart store brand and people kept coming back for more. Matter of fact, the wedding cake was barely touched! All I can tell you is that if you use canned icing, just try several different brands to see which one tastes the best for your cake.
