Since it is a popular cake with many, you will need to find something that matches your taste preferences. Just like with icing, not everyone has the same opinion. It takes a little testing to find the "perfect" recipe for you.
Your best bet is a few experiments. Look for recipes that have buttermilk or sourcream-for moisture. And, look at the ratio of sugar to flour to find one less sweet.
The Cake Bible is a good resource, as well as your own favorite cookbooks.

thanks! I figured I'd have to experiment. My cake was a hit and most didn't think it was too sweet (OMG, it was SO sweet to me...the cake, BC, MMF...yikes), but cake-loving me prefers less sugar. Guess I'll go check out those books.
btw, I love plain, duncan hines yellow cake! yum...

Magnolia has a great white cake recipe. It is off the hook. I made it this past weekend and it was gone in a hot second. Dense, but not sweet and not heavy. Try it!

Hi Cryssi
Maybe it's a name thing, but I also don't like really sweet cakes. If a recipe calls for more sugar than flour, I've learnt to steer well clear of it. A recipe with about equal quantities can be okay as long as there is lots of cocoa powder, buttermilk or sour cream as well.
Recipes in the Whimsical Bakehouse book are pretty good, but my absolute favourite is the Chocolate Blackout cake in Margaret Braun's wonderful Cakewalk book. This cake layered with a bittersweet chocolate ganache is rich and delicious with only a hint of sweetness behind the chocolate.
Regards,
Cris.
