I have a cake to do this weekend for a 90th birthday. All I have to go on is that she likes the color blue and they want a big 90 on it. It is going to be a full sheet cake. I hate a big empty looking cake. Do you all have any suggestions, or better yet.... pics?

#1...numbers look like pearl necklaces layed down on blue background. flower accents

#2...numbers are made for boquets/sprays for flowers...deep blue flowers one pastel background.

#3... large central oval w/ numbers piped. rest of cake covered in two-tone lattice (expanded basketweave)..deep blue backround under lattice, white lattice. reverser for oval-- white background w/ blue letters, flowers scatterered.

#4...wedgewood look w/ raised lettering and numbers.

I am doing a big sheet cake this weekend that will have white icing on top and sides and then a greenish oval in the middle. I think that helps break the stark white look. Hope this helps.

Wow Doug... now if you'd just come make one of those for me that would be great! LOL Great ideas. I just hate doing sheet cakes lately. alicia_froedge, I agree that does cut down on the giant white slab look.

I did an elegant 9 x 13 for our 90th grandpa b-day a couple of years ago in ivory BC that was modeled after a Wilton square wedding cake, wish I had the pic scanned in--it was very pretty!

I did sotas on top and carried it down about 1/3 on the sides, then did alternating upright rows of shells and dragging pearls every 1-1/2" along the sides. Did the lettering and 90 in delphinium blue. Turned out very nice.

If you reeaaaallly want to see it, I can scan it in and post it. It didn't look blank, but it wasn't a giant sheet either...

If you can -- try some colorflow for the numbers 9-0 -- you can choose fonts and come up with something spectacular....

I was about to say maybe you could do cookies in the shape of the 9 and the 0, or even small cakes carved, depending on how big the cake is........

Colorflow is a great idea, though.......
