I have no experience with fondant, and I bought the powder mix trying to compromise between cost and time-saving. I experimented the other night, and I produced a soft, buttery icing from the instructions on the package. It was not at all appropriate for rolling, probably better for filling or icing. What is the best way to mix this powder so I can use it to cover a cake? Water, milk, butter? How much? Thanks for any help!

Usually, the dry fondant mix is for candy centers. Mixed with cream, it makes delicious candy. I don't think you can make rolled fondant from this.

Most fondant is make from powdered sugar, gelatin, and a couple other ingredients.

Baking911.com has some recipes.

So, does this not taste like the Wilton ready to use fondant?

I don't know what regular fondant tastes like, but I've heard it's not so good. I think this stuff is really tasty though. It's really buttery and sweet. I ended up using it to frost ginger snaps and my family loved it.
