Ladies have you ever wondered about the men cake decorators on CC? I have. I want to see pictures of their cakes. And men if you are reading this... What does your wife/girlfriend think about your love of cake? I have often thought how neat and fun it would be if my husband loved to bake and decorate cakes with me. Instead he loves guns and chainsaws! HA! -rhondie

Hey, we men can bake and shoot guns, although I prefer cakes. I have no idea why I am infatuated with cakes. I think for me, it has to do with the construction process and trying to balance flavors. Plus if you think about it, all of it, even down to decorating, it is one big challenge, and there is nothing like a good challenge. lol.

Thanks so much!!! I will try and post more pictures. I either let my batteries run down when I need my camera or it is missing, lol.

It is an interesting topic. I am not sure what one could do to get more men or some women involved for that matter. Maybe it just clicks with a personality type, lol. Now that is getting deep.

Take care...

Now where are Doug and Dale?
I know that's at least 2 more men on this site!
I let my hubbie help me mix cake mix this weekend. I had to make a quintuple recipe for a 14" cake round (I had way too much batter), but since I didn't want quircky flavors, I mixed smaller batches with my KA stand mixer, and then put it all together in a BIG mixing bowl. My hubbie volunteered (yes that's right) to run the hand mixer for me to get it all mixed together.
Of course it might help that this wedding cake is for his best friend and he might feel guilty if he didn't help since he was the one that told me not to charge them for the cake, that it was going to be our gift. (Which I had already decided before he told me to.)

Hmmmm...I like doing cakes. I also like chainsaws and tools...though I tend to end up in the E.R. when using my tools. I'm a typical man. How does my wife feel about me doing cakes? She says I get cranky as hell and she wants to leave the house and head for the hotel hills. I tend to get uptight and swing the almighty spatula of death...thru cake or whatever is close. I've been known to cleave a cake in two, smash it with my hands in frustration, fling frosting, curse the cake goddess. Hell's Kitchen. Though she does like to eat the results, mistakes and trimmings.
Why cakes? It relaxes me.

I like saws too...
I like guns (I teach my son to have great respect for a gun, it's a tool NOT a toy), hunting, fishing, motorcycles, sexy sport cars, running a drill press and a compound miter saw, planting flowers (not weeding them thought), mowing the grass, running the weed wacker, using saws-alls, baking, crocheting, sewing, wanna learn to knit, cooking, and cake decorating..I am not your typical women...something even my husband admits.
Oh...I almost forgot- I like to brew beer. My husband and I are homebrewers...I'm the cook- he's the muscle. We've made some good stuff! (And....some not so good stuff. icon_redface.gif )

Hey Dale, maybe you do get cranky, but maybe your wife gets a little jelous that you are so talented with your cake skills. In my post I said that I thought it would be fun if my husband and I made cakes together but now I am thinking I might get envious of him if he was better than me. I checked out your picts. Your cakes are great! I was just curious about what mens cakes look like. There are a lot of men chefs so why not cake decorators?

Nah...she just has no interest in doing it. By "it", I mean cakes...the other "IT", she has interest in. Otherwise, all that extra frosting would just go to waste! Cranky is an understatement she says, more like "Hell hath no fury like Dale in the kitchen."
She works in a lab, more technical than crafty. She knows a girl named Rhondie that works in the lab too by the way.

When I lived in Chicago, all the people in our building would get together on Sunday's and bring a dish and have a big lunch. I miss that. One couple use to make their own beer and it was amazing. I love home brewed beers, very artesian.

I wish my husband liked it (cake decorating Dale!) He just found out recently what's in my buttercream and it took him a few days to get over it. To him, Crisco is what we fry our chicken and pork chops in. We don't add it to our frosting! No problem with the 2 sticks of butter and entire bag of powdered sugar though icon_lol.gif I've been making my own frosting for years and he never paid attention icon_sad.gif He only found out because someone at work wanted my frosting recipe and he told them I bought it from someplace called Wilton. I was angry with him but I should probably give him some credit for knowing the name Wilton was somehow associated with cake decorating LOL

I like it, my wife likes that I like it, everybody likes it...he should like it too. Cake decorating I mean. Crisco...amazing that it can taste so good huh? He cant help that he thinks you order your frosting...we think all food products come from cans.

I guess I'm going to have to start sprinkling myself with powdered sugar after I'm done....like the Krispy Treat commercial icon_lol.gif Maybe leave the kitchen the disaster it is after I bake or decorate. He'd think can then!

You may have to fight my hubby in order to get me...he ain't letting go of me...he know's he has something special. (And there are many more reasons in addition to the ones I listed above.)
Dale- I saw that you live in NC- are you anywhere near Huntersville?
Maybe I can give you a batch of beer next time I come down to visit my father.

I live in Burlington. 2 hours away. I just got back from Huntersville yesterday. I just went down there for my sisters wedding (she got married in Jetton Park) to make her wedding cake. I set it up ad ran back to the hotel to change, was a little late for the wedding...she held the wedding up until I got back. Made me feel special too!

I can't believe that was your first wedding cake Dale. It's perfect! Your sister was soooo sweet to hold up the wedding for you. I have 2 younger brothers and they'd do just about anything for me and I'd do just about anything for them. I've got playground scars to prove it icon_lol.gif . Nothing like family.

Uhhh...ever hear of television? I can barely handle one. 11 and doing the puberty thing. Tears all the time at the drop of a pin. She told me the other day that I dont know what it's like to be a woman. I could only say "Oh thank you lord, oh thank you lord!"

Sisters and brothers....I've got both, it's a wonder we didnt kill each other growing up. They all have scars to prove it too...mostly from me. I was smaller so I'd get em while they had thier backs turned...or were sleeping. Whatever worked best at the time!
Now there's a good thread..."What's the worst thing you have ever done to your brother or sister while growing up." I did some pretty evil stuff on those 3. I still laugh about it today!

DH and I were both one of 4 kids in our families (I have an older sister too) so we're used to the madness. Whenever I get to my wits end, I think of my Grandmothers. One had 8 children and the other had 12. If they could live through that, I can live through 4. They did both pass in their 50s though icon_confused.gif

We did some awful funny things to each other growing up too. My kids are angels compared to me and my siblings but they're still little so there's plenty of time to make memories icon_lol.gif One of the funniest things I used to do to my baby brother was to treat him like a doll. I'd walk to the corner store and buy baby food and feed it to him when he was like 5 or I'd dress him up like a girl and put make up on him. We thought it was fun but it's amazing he turned out all right after all that icon_lol.gif

That's soooo awesome about your sister..and you did a good job!
Now, it shall be interesting to see how my weekend turns out this weekend.
Myself, hubby, and my son are all standing up in my husband's best friend's wedding. I am also making the wedding cake. Hair appointment on Saturday at 8AM (I am going to have such a migraine by the end of the day with all the bobby pins in my hair), deliver cake @ 11AM, and be to church in time for 2pm ceremony. icon_eek.gif

You all do great job!!! I'm jealous of your cakes.

As far as brothers, I lost my little brother 10 years ago, he was 18, and now I've just found out I have a big brother. My mom had him when she was 17, and last month the social services called because he was looking for her. She thought he was dead, b/c my grandma told her so in 1975. So she was thinking that both her sons were in heaven. She's supposed to have a first phone converstion with him this week. Can't wait...... He is an artist too. He owns an art gallery for new artists that don't do conventional art, and he does tatooing also. He paints on bodies I paint on cakes!!! And you should see my mom's drawings... guess it runs in the familly.

have a nice day

Lorris I'm so sorry for the loss of your brother. What a blessing it is to be reunited with your older brother. You and your mother must be thrilled! What a wonderful gift to you both. It certainly sounds like you all share some common bonds. I'm sure your brother will be very glad to have a sister like you to make beautiful cakes for him icon_smile.gif

I am making the main cake from the wilton design "The Glow Endures" but with variations. It's going to be white with lavendar accents. And on the top is going to be a silver double happiness symbol.
The 14" round is going to be Chocolate Amaretto Cake with a Seedless Raspberry Cream filling (non-dairy), the 10" and 6" rounds are going to be Tiramisu Cake with a Mascarpone cheese filling. And it will be iced with cali4dawn's buttercream (with a few variations of mine in it).
SO if I can pull this off this weekend..I am going to pat myself on the back!

My little brother is the reason why I went into cakes. My mom never liked baking desserts. So one day, I think I was 15 y-o or so, I decided to get my mom's cookbooks and bake a cake for my little brother(he was 4 years younger than me). He was always buying candy bars for dessert or sometimes twinkies. After a few tries, he was even begging me to bake him a cake. He once asked me to do a weird one. So I colored the cake batter green and iced it with pink icing, yuck, but he liked it, it was weird in-deed!!! He never tried to bake one but I'm sure he would've been great. He was my first taster. Now I'll have an older brother to test on, and he's married with 2 kids, a girl (9) and a boy (7). I have 5 nephews on my hubby's side, so I have one niece!! I have two goddaughters but they're my cousins. Can't wait!!!!

How wonderful for you! I have great memories of baking for my family when I was young. I made my first scratch cake with scratch cherry marshmallow frosting when I was 10. I made it for my mother for her birthday. I think the recipe came from an old Betty Crocker cookbook. The cake tasted awful but the frosting was good. It was flavored with maraschino cherry juice. Mom loved it and I was hooked forever after on baking and cakes.
