sort of like sour cream?

I just brought some home, have never bought it before, but it smells a bit like sour cream.
Is it bad or normal?

THANKS!

I always have buttermilk on hand with the powdered version. The liquid one seems to always go bad before I finish the entire bottle.

does the dried stuff work as well as the fresh, for giving that nice flavor and texture?

I use it for the liquid in my chocolate cake recipe. I've never had moister cakes. Chocolate cakes, to me, can get pretty dry!

I have started using dried buttermilk recently because I can never use the liquid fast enough either. I just made a pound cake with the powder and it turned out WONDERFUL. You just add the powder to your other dry ingredients and add in the proper amount of water when it says to add the buttermilk. HTH

Sure does! Powdered buttermilk works as well as fresh for me.
