could they be talking about the "support a cause" type ribbon? You know like pink ribbons for breast cancer, yellow for supporting the troops, etc. That's what comes to mind for me....

No she doesn't know either! Here's what she wrote:

I have heard of something called a ribbon cake. Can you tell me what it means ? Does it mean that there are different layers with the different flavours ? If so, is it possible to have something like that with mazipan icing ? You can decide what flavours blend. But something really yummy. Please advice.

I don't know if this is what it is, but "ribbon cake" made me think of this cake that was at the Austin Cake Show this year:

A traditional cake at a bridal shower is a ribbon cake there are ribbons with charms attached and there is one for everyone in the bridal party and they are stuck under the cake they pull them out before they eat it. O.k. so I think that is what a ribbon cake is totally not sure but that is what I thought.

Could be the awareness ribbon thing as mentioned above, but it could also be something akin to a swirl cake - think fudge "ribbon" (ripple) ice cream - one flavor with another flavor ribboned through it.

I don't know, but this is the crazy lady that has emailed me 27 times (I kid you not!), over her daughter's 4th birthday cake. Now I thoought we had finally sorted it all out - design, flavours (lemon cake, vanilla buttercream) etc. This cake is for Sunday, I have 8 cakes and a wedding tasting to do in the next 5 days, I'm thinking that she can just go and take a flying leap cos I don't have the time for this!!!! She's getting what she ordered!

If you google there are quit a few recipes and they involve ribbons of chocolate or cinnamon. But there really is wedding charm ribbon pulling tradition at bridal showers.

I've heard of ribbon cake from Sri Lanken people. It's a butter cake and it's got 3 different layers of colours like pink, green and yellow.

Edited to add:

Sometimes the different colours are seperated by icing, but they don't have to be.

Kelleym's link is a great guess. That's a quilling technique. That's so odd that the client doesn't even know what it is yet she's requesting it.

Here's my ideas: Ribbon cake pan, as someone above suggested; cake with a ribbon of fudge, for example, swirled in it; a cake with a ribbon on top - out of gumpaste, fondant and/or sugar; then there's a recipe for "Ribbon Cake" on food network I found: http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,1977,FOOD_9936_36090,00.html

I'm curious to know what it is that the client wants! Please let us know when you find out so this mystery can be sovled! detective.gif

When the question was asked I thought of strips of fondant curled on dowel rods to set and placed on a cake in a mound of icing. With different colors. Like in primary or pastels. Or a package cake with the curly ribbons coming out. Your best bet is to ask your customer what her idea is.
