On May 19th my niece will be graduating from college with an RN degree. I would love to make a cake that would wow the entire family, and make her feel as special as she is.. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I'd go with an old fashioned nurse's cap and a stethoscope.

If you go to the gallery and click on "Search" and then type in "Nurse" it has 2 pages of photos, there are still bugs in the gallery so not every photo will be a nurses cakes, but there are several there. This one was my favorite and you could make the cap of gumpaste. .

And here is a template or pattern for a nurses cap.

That cake is beautiful. The only thing is, most all nurses do not wear caps any longer. You might want to check with her mom to see if they even use one for ceremony. Caps used to be very important, the shape and style of the cap signifying the school the nurse graduated from. Nowdays many schools have dropped them so it may not have meaning for the grad. On the other hand, it is a recognizable symbol. I would still ask her mom though. That can be a touchy subject.

It is true, most don't wear caps any longer, but they are still symbolic of nursing. My daughter will become an LVN at the end of this year and an RN in 2009, she is getting a cake with a nurses cap if mom is still around then. icon_biggrin.gif

I have to beg to differ with those of you who said nurses rarely wear caps anymore. True, you will not see many working nurses running around the hospital sporting a cap, however MANY nursing schools still incorporate them as part of the uniform. I know I had to wear mine on clinical days, and the schools who didn't wear them for clinical, wore them for their graduation pictures. Even if your relative didnt wear it as part of her uniform, its still the most recognizable symbol of nursing around.
Also, I would check the schools website and print out a photo of their "pin". Nursing graduation involves a pinning ceremony (which is a big deal), each pin is specific to each individual school. I think it would be great to incorporate her pin into her cake design. Also, there are some really pretty nursing cakes in the cake galleries if you are looking for further inspiration! Good luck and happy baking!

I think a nurse's cap and stethescope would be good. Maybe a border of bandaids, the RX symbol and of course RN. Other ideas might be a Blood Pressure cuff, Heart rhythm strip, or maybe something to represent the specialty she is going in to. (OB, surgery, etc.) (Thought I'd chime in because I'm a nurse also.) Find out what the ceremony includes. When I graduated, we had a seperate pinning ceremony. We also had a "lighting of the lamp". You could incorporate a pin & lamp somehow. Perhaps you could also include a quote from F. Nightinggale.
Or...if you want them to have a real taste of reality, you could make a bedpan cake & put flowers in it (HA-HA!!). I think I've actually seen one on here. That probably wouldn't be appropriate, would it??

We had a separated capping ceremony about 6 months into our first year. At graduation we received our pins. I think a cake that includes the cap of the school, lamp and pledge would be beautiful. When my daughter graduated they did wear the cap with the uniform. First and last time, I think!! They wear scrubs now. I did sheet cakes with tiny caps in marked off squares for their reception after the ceremony.
