I am now the official cake person at my work and whenever someone's bday comes up they want me to do the cakes. Which I love, cuz it's gotten me sooooo many cake orders. I usually like to do the cakes for the person after something they like, but being as that I am still fairly new to the job, I don't know everyone. I have some birthdays coming up and I was wondering if you guys could help me come up with some ideas on how to do a basic birthday cake, but yet, something that will make them go "oooohhhhh" when they see it. Ya know? I have looked in the galleries, but there's like 206 some odd pages of birthday cakes alone so if any of you have one that you wouldn't mind posting in here to help me out, it would be great! Thanx in advance! icon_biggrin.gif

do you "do" fondant?

if so...lots of ideas using stripes, circles, etc. (even plaids -- madras is back! -- at least according to Old Navy)

and

could do box cakes that are "gift wrapped"....go hit the gift wrapping dept, find a pattern you like, cover cake board w/ it (and of course cover it w/ clear contact paper) then replicate the design on the cake.

not sure where you work, but if it's in Dilbert's "Cubicleville", take a stroll during your break and check out the recipients decor de cubicle for ideas.

what the heck are madras anyways? is it just a fancy upgrade from plaid? lol
thanx for the ideas.
i do work in cubicleville and i am about the only one that has any personal items out on their desks... i figure you are there more than home, might as well make it somewhat feel like it... but they don't and they have been there for like 10 years... sad!
anyone else got any ideas or samples you'd like to share? icon_biggrin.gif

Have you tried looking in the gallery?

Look through the Birthday Cakes section, and maybe bookmark a few designs you like, and then try to take the main thing you like about each one, and incorporate it into one design.

Like, maybe take a look at this cake. The bow and gift tag and reverse-shell border are really cute. Maybe change the colors a bit to better suit the person, maybe put the bow a little to the side and skip the lacework, and instead frost it in a single color with polkadots to match the color of the bow.

Or, something as simple as circle cut-outs could work really well, such as this cake.

And I personally think that this birthday cake is just stunning.

as for madras: garish (IMHO) plaids --> Old Navy Madras for Women (not for the faint of heart or for this ol' fellow!!!! so 50's retro!...best left to those young wild things!)

here's a link to a decorator who has several really nice, easy and really attractive stock sheet cake designs she repeats over and over w/ color variations Sugar Frosted check both her youth/teen and adult galleries for may great ideas.

if you look at sugar frosted's teens..it's the one w/ the candles and in her adult the one that is oval w/ lattice and roses.

candles for guys, lattice/roses for the ladies.

I've done 'balloon' cakes for birthday people who I know nothing about. It makes them go 'ooooh!' and it's really easy. There's one in my photos (white square with balloons on the side and confetti on top), and here's a really grainy picture of another one.

well I do the same thing for my work. check out my gallery photos...I have quite a few in there from ones I've taken to work. fairly simple degins......but everyone usually loves them. The two chocolate cakes (one w/fruit and one w/ganache truffles) were everyone's favs!! And they were super simple to do!!

what i usually do is have the bday person/s pick their flavor cake/filling and I decorate how I want. it is usually easier to do w/only one or two people having bdays....but sometimes i've had as many as 6 people!! (we do a monthly cake for everyone...much cheaper on everyone that way!!)

hope you get a few ideas!!
