I am in the process of making a Wizard of Oz cake right now and really wanted to use melted green jolly ranchers to make 'pieces' of the Emerald City. But, I DON"T KNOW HOW! icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif

I know that I need to break the pieces up into smaller crushed size pieces and melt in a small non-stick saucepan over low heat, but I don't know what to use to pour it into to shape it.

I'm thinking long, straight pieces that I can stand up somehow and then maybe use bc or ri to draw doors and windows on?????

How do I get long, straight pieces? Do I use crisco rubbed all over a baking sheet and pour the liquid over it? And do I have to let it cool for a certain amount of time?

How would I get the pieces to stand up on the cake?

Ok,

I remembered this tread from a while back -- earlier this week...

http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-decorating-ftopict-254901-.html

Also I have another - this other information

Jacque Torres is the one that uses this technique, he had a chocolate/candy show on Food Network a couple of years ago and before that somewhere else.

http://web.foodnetwork.com/foo.....&x=13&y=12

Here he used playdough as a candy mold.

http://www.foodnetwork.com/foo.....74,00.html

Basically what you do is roll out your (homemade playdough) over a siltpat and cut out where you want your glass to be. Then make your sugar. Check out my recipe from the post listed above.

Otherwise if you really want to use the jolly ranchers, I would put them in place on a siltpat, stick them in the oven, I think there are directions on the post. When the candy is cooling or cool enough to the touch try and cut the candy to the shape you want. If it gets too cold, put it back in the oven. It might take a few try, I read someone did it this way and it worked really well for them.

HTH

Good Luck

Thank you! I will try that.

I'll post a pic hopefully tomorrow since that is when the 1st cake is due. She ordered 2 cakes, so the 2nd one will be due on Friday. (2 parties)

I can't wait to see the pictures. I have a Wizard of Oz cake due in two weeks. I was going to make the Emerald City by using the Wilton Enchanted Castle pan and green candy melts. Your idea of using Jolly Ranchers sounds so much better.

I just did that very same thing to make a stained glass cross for a communion cake (in my pics). I melted the jolly ranchers on aluminum foil that I sprayed lightly with pam. Then I placed it in a loaf pan for the initial melting so it wouldn't go all over the place. Once it was just cool enough to handle, I started cutting it into the shape I needed and I just stuck it back into the warm oven for a minute or two to warm it back up if it got too cool.

I made the frame out of fondant and gumpaste.

Took some trial and errors, but came out pretty good for a first attempt! Good luck... please post a pic when you are done.

I made a cake of THE WIZ. The top layer was green fondant and then i brushed it with vanilla and sprinkled green sugar crystals on it. It was nice and shiny and easy. I think the pic is in my photos.
If you look to the botoom left of the cake you can see the wicked witches feet coming out...

Well crap! I just went out and purchased 4 bags of jolly ranchers and can you believe out of the 4 bags I got a whopping 3, yes 3 pieces of the green?!?! The rest are all pink lemonade, strawberry, and raspberry!

Do I need to use an oil based (candy colors) or a gel based like americolor to add to the blue to get the green?

Does anyone know? I need help quick!

Sorry, I don't know. Since it's not chocolate, the gel might be fine. I would experiment with one.

Or can you find some green lifesavers? Or the multi-color pack? They usually have green in the original flavors.
