Hi everyone, first I just want to thank you all for the great tips and ideas I got from this site. I made a cake last night using advice and tips from all you pros and it turned out so nice. And it was so easy to get it smooth and nice using the viva towels! Wow. I've learned so much.
The only thing I'm so confused on is how to transport my cakes. I went to my local grocery store to the bakery section and they sold me a "full sheet cake box and board". I bought a 12x18x2 pan thinking this was a half sheet and made a choc. and a white to put together to make a full sheet, but the board and box are too small! Did i get the wrong size of pan? If not, where can I find boxes and boards that fit my monsterous cakes Any help would be appreciated. Thanks again!

You should be able to get a 12x18 cake onto a 13x19 board and into a 14x19 box. You can get these things from Michaels or AC Moore. If you can find a specialty cake store near you, they may sell bigger boards and boxes. Good luck!

When I do a full sheet I will put 2 19x13 boxes together - leave the fronts of both open - slid the cake into one & then slid the other box under to cover the other half of the cake.

I found my 12 x 18 cake from yesterday for a huge wedding, was big enough to go on a 13 x 19" board, but it left no room for borders and to be able to transport, so I put it on a 14 x 20" board from our local cake supply store...
I got a large box there too that was for a 3/4" sheet (I think), and it was plenty big enough to fit in, EXCEPT it was only 4" deep, and my cake was 4+" tall, without the board, SO I had to adapt the lid a bit to make it sit higher and then used Press-Seal glad wrap to cover the front opening where there was a gap between the lid and box...It worked great.
An interesting aside from this morning after the wedding--the bride's mom just told me that all they ate was the sheet cake---my beautiful, 4-tiered, 6, 9, 12, and 15" tiers of fondant and multiple fillings that I baked and decorated for days, NEVER GOT CUT OR SERVED. The groom gave it away to his friends in the boxes I left behind...AMAZING!
Here's what the whole thing looked like--BTW...I'm still in shock--it just sat there looking pretty all night...

Thanks so much for all of your help. I guess I should just purchase an 11x15 pan and use that for a HALF sheet. That way it would fit into full sheet cake boxes. I just got confused because some places said a FULL sheet was 24x18 so that is why I got the 12x18 but I guess thats not the standard FULL size.
Homecook your cake is AMAZING!! I can't believe they just "gave" it away. I would be so upset. You spend all that time and energy and you want them to eat it and enjoy it so then keep coming back but they didn't even try it!! WOW. But you should still be soo proud of that cake. I could only dream of making a cake that looks like that!

Something you might consider for the future is doing a 2-layer 12 x 18 cake instead of a full sheet to get the same amount of servings. Since the cake is taller, you just cut pieces smaller. I always do this instead of doing full sheet cakes because I don't want to be bothered with trying to find a box/board that big!
Homecook, that cake was beautiful; and I bet it tasted great too. At least the groom was smart enough not to chunk it! :-O THAT would have made me sick to my stomach after so much work.
