
Any tips on how I can make a flower spray that is cascading down the side of the cake? I plan to use a whole slew of roses ( gumpaste) and place a bunch on the top tier then drape them slanting down one side. Aside from trying to toothpick them into the sides- wont work.. they are as hard as rocks now.. and they are pretty broad with very delicate leaves- I'm hesitant to try and just stack them next to each other or on top of each other. Should I get some kind of silk flower piece of vine and attach them to that and then secure that to the cake with royal? Or build a base out of fondant to let them sit on going down the side of the cake>

you can attach the flowers to your fondant covered cake with gum glue. Once it dries they adhere well

Well, i think that will work for a couple of them, but i'm trying to get a them on a slant instead of stuck right to the side of the cake. Unfortunately, the way i made them, they flair out quite a bit and are super delicate on the sides. I have no idea what the heck i was thinking when i was making them.. Maybe if i add an inch or two of fondant to the base of the flowers and then toothpick THAT part into the side of the cake?


when building a cascade, start from the bottom and work your way up. This allows the bottom flowers to sort of "hold" the next flower up as your gum glue dries... and don't use too much glue. A tiny bit is all you need. many people WAY overdue it on the glue, not realizing that it won't hold better, just takes longer to dry that way! You can use a bit of fresh and softened fondant to stick them to the cake and help them hold. Good luck!

FOR FUTURE REFERENCE..... gumpaste flowers can be put on floral wire when they are made. This allows you to connect them as if they were silk flowers into sprays to be cascaded. Since you've made the flowers, you can only adhere them to the fondant as they are. I'd use royal icing dots to "glue" them where you want them.

Usually it's best to hook a piece of wire into the cone and let this dry before you add the petals, that way you've got some way of attaching the roses (to each other to form a spray or into a blob of fondant to form an arrangement to sit on top of the cake).
If you haven't done this, all is not lost. You could shape a piece of styrafoam to fit the angle formed by the height of the top tier and the additional width of the tier below - it would be a three dimensional right-angled triangle, tapered on each side. You could then just glue the roses to this and glue this lightly onto the covered cake. Probably best to cover the styrofoam with fondant the same shade as the cake.

AH yes... I even thought of attaching the wire before I made them.. and then i didnt anyway. SO now i'm paying the price. Thank you very much, everyone, for allyour suggestions. I have been so busy making all these crazy novelty cakes that I havent made any flowers since last summer and that is completely my fault.
