Alrighty, got a question. Which tip do you find the easiest to write with? For some reason, I just cannot get the writing down. I've got a pretty steady hand, yet I can't make a straight line and I'm never in the center, no matter what I do. I tried writing faster and larger, but still looks pretty crappy. I've tried tip 1 but I don't seem to have any control over that tip. It just comes out all wavy. Tip 2 works a little better but I still don't have much control and tip 3 seems to be too thick. Does anyone use tip 13? I even have a problem tracing the lines when I use the press. I honestly think I'm just gonna make cakes that say NOTHING icon_smile.gif Any advice would surely be appreciated. Thanks everyone.

I usually use tip 2 or 3...never use tip 1 I only use that for intricate stuff and doing cornelli lace and sotas.

I usually write with a 3, and then when I am done, wish I had used a 2, because it seemed bigger than I thought it would!

I cheat! Find a font you like print it out and poke holes in it with a pin on a block of styrofoam. When you lift up the paper the back will be very rough. Lay it on the cake and press lightly with your finger tracing the letters. Remove the paper and it is as easy as connect the dots. The size tip I use depends on the font I have picked.

I use tip 2 or 3 depending on the size of cake and results I want. I found the easiest way to write is to make sure that your tip is about 3mm (sorry canadian here, don't know the conversion) from the icing so that it falls without having time to go all wavy.

I use tip 3 what helps me a lot is I ice the top of my cake I let it sit or work on another area to give the cake icing time to dry then I use a press and for some reason its a lot easier.

Normally tip #3, unless its a large surface, then normally a 4 or 5 even.

I usually use a 2 or 3 depending on the size of writting area. However when I first started I usually used the smallest star tip that was available to me. The effect from the star tip helps to hide some of those small squiggles until you get a little more controled with your writting. Just remember to keep practicing with the round tip every now and then and see you you are improving =)

I have trouble writing in a straight line too. I think I'm going to get one of those lasers to help me with that.

laser? Wow, I hadn't thought of anything like that. Have you got one in mind? Where would you get it from?

Carpenters use them to line stuff up. They are laser levels. You can get them at Walmart...I think they are about $20. I just keep forgetting to pick one up.

No problem. I think I got the idea from CC, I can't remember. It wasn't original, though.

About the sole thing I learned at my old crappy job was this great trick on how to improve your writing: Get yourself a children's script writing book and some either parchment paper of tracing paper. Practice over and over. Eventually, you will develop your own "cake handwriting" which is totally different from your actual handwriting....It's an awesome technique. As for writing, my new job makes these really cool writers that I try to immidate---no tip used. Mix lots of piping gel with some icing into a baggy and cut the tip very small. I prefer this to using a tip and we have these writers solely for writing on cakes.

I always use tip 13 or 14. I find that the writing looks better than when I use 2 or 3. If I am doing a larger cake that requires larger writing then I just use a bigger star tip, but 13 or 14 is my standard.

the level idiea is great because I do find that my writing doesn't always stay straight.

At work I use a 3 or 4 even. Although it depends on the effect and size of cake, I have used bigger tips but I prefer the 3. This is also because I don't have any smaller tips there yet! I've been waiting to go shop for some tips (I've only worked there for a year now LOL) and a new caddy for them.

I've never used a star tip to write...I'll have to try that! I've also used parchment bags (just starting to add piping gel to that though), slightly snipped.

Love the idea of a laser level! I'll have to add that to my must-buy list. icon_smile.gif
