Can you use wax paper in baking a cake over parchment paper? I ran out of parchment paper and was wondering if you can use wax paper? I'm baking a 10 in square white cake.

THANKS

I did a google search on this topic and found this thread:

http://www.chowhound.com/topics/350365

According to it, wax paper will smoke terribly and could catch fire(?!?!) when heated because of the wax coating.
I personally would not take a chance!

Hope it helps!

I answered prematurely.

According to Aloca's website (http://www.alcoa.com/reynoldskitchens/en/faq_detail.asp?info_page_id=756&prod_id=1799&cat_id=1337) it can be used to bake cakes because the batter covers the entire sheet of paper.

Sorry!

wax paper is all that was available in the old days - it works just fine. I use it interchangeably with parchment. Parchment's ability to be used for cookies and be reused is what has made it the replacement for wax paper. Also I have trouble finding wax paper in my supermarket. I had to get my last roll at the drugstore.

I can't tell you about how it will work in a cake pan, but don't sub it when making cookies. I accidently put wax paper instead of parchment paper on the baking sheet and my cookies were all wax-coated from the melted wax off of the paper! 30 cookies straight into the trash!

Thanks for your advice. I actually ran up to the store and bought some parchment paper. I was in the middle of making cupcakes and ran out of cups for the cakes. SO I bought everything I needed.

Thanks for the tips though!

I've used it in the past when I was out of parchment and it works just fine!

I always use wax paper to line my cake pans it works wonderfully and no the wax does not melt off of it.

You can use wax paper. Only line the bottom of the pan.

You can't do it with cookies, only with cake. if the wax paper is completely covered in batter, there is no danger.
