I did a google search on this topic and found this thread:

According to it, wax paper will smoke terribly and could catch fire(?!?!) when heated because of the wax coating.
I personally would not take a chance!
Hope it helps!

According to Aloca's website (http://www.alcoa.com/reynoldskitchens/en/faq_detail.asp?info_page_id=756&prod_id=1799&cat_id=1337) it can be used to bake cakes because the batter covers the entire sheet of paper.
Sorry!

wax paper is all that was available in the old days - it works just fine. I use it interchangeably with parchment. Parchment's ability to be used for cookies and be reused is what has made it the replacement for wax paper. Also I have trouble finding wax paper in my supermarket. I had to get my last roll at the drugstore.

I can't tell you about how it will work in a cake pan, but don't sub it when making cookies. I accidently put wax paper instead of parchment paper on the baking sheet and my cookies were all wax-coated from the melted wax off of the paper! 30 cookies straight into the trash!

You can use wax paper. Only line the bottom of the pan.

I Tried this about 2 yr ago (with cookies) when i was new to baking and it caught fire and the whole apt filled up with smoke! I WILL NEVER DO IT AGAIN!!! it took a couple of days for that nasty smell to go away!!!!

You can't do it with cookies, only with cake. if the wax paper is completely covered in batter, there is no danger.
