I used Tip #233 today to make the grass on some golf cupcakes. I had a terrible time getting the frosting to flow out of this tip. I thinned my frosting with water and piping gel. Does anyone have any pointers on how to get this tip to work better for me. TIA

I don't know if this will help, but make sure not to put too much icing in your bag. With a tip like this you need to put a good amount of pressure into it, which you can't do if the bag is too full. You want to be able to get your hand cupped around the icing in the bag, not very far from where the tip is, so you can really put some pressure on it! HTH

Maybe you are getting sugar crystals stuck in the tip. Do you sift your sugar or better yet, do you buy 10x so you do not have to sift your sugar? My wilton instructor told us to by Domino sugar. I buy Food Lion sugar because it is 10x and do not have any problems. She said as long as it is 10x- go for it then. You may need to change brands. I had problems with Wal Mart brand.

Your golf cupcakes are ADORABLE!! But I think the groundskeeper needs to be fired! LOL!

I have a bunch of 233 tips because it will invariably clog up for one reason or another. So, instead of having to stop and clean, I just pop off the clogged tip and pop on a new one.

Examine whatever is clogging the tip. If you think you may be getting undissolved sugar crystals, stir a small amount of BOILING water into your icing. That should help.

I have had this problem before too. If you are using granulated sugar in your icing recipe, you have to make sure it is completely dissolved or if you are using powdered, it does help to sift. I have also added some piping gel to my icing which seemed to help out.

What type of icing are you using? I was just assuming you were using BC made with powdered sugar.

Thank you all for the very helpful hints. I think I now know what I was doing wrong. I had too much frosting in my bag and I needed to sift my powdered sugar. I think I will look for 10x the next time I buy powdered sugar.

I used the grass tip for the first time last week, and while I did not have a problem with it clogging up - I was suprised at how NOT easy it was (not quite to the level of difficult, just not easy).

now I am thinking how lucky I was that I did not run into other problems ! Just a sore hand and some frustration with keeping the grass short!
