I recieved an order for a cake for a person who is retiring due to a terminal illness. The person who ordered it wants me to write something on the cake but I really don't know what's appropriate. Any suggestions? She also wants one huge cake to feed 100 people but doesn't want a tiered cake. I have never made a slab cake before! Is it possible to serve that many people with a sheet cake and how big does it have to be????
Please help!

Oh boy, that is a really tough order. As for the writing, don't write anything yourself, the person ordering it should think of something her or himself. You could really get into hot water if you write something and it comes over the wrong way, especially if you don't know the person it is meant for. Can't really help you with the sheet cake, sorry, but let us know, what you come up with. How about just making a time line of the person's life, up to the point of retirement.
Best of luck with the cake and the strength and courage to make it special for this person

I could possibly give a few ideas but what type of job are they retiring from?

As far as size goes, you will need a 15" x 22" two layer cake (in other words: four 11" x 15" cakes) to feed 100. That is based on 1.5" x 2" x 4" high pieces, which are very generous servings.

That's a pretty big cake, and will be very heavy. Is there any way your customer would settle for two cakes? This may make it easier on you.

As for the message, I'm sorry I don't have any suggestions. I agree that you should have the person who ordered the cake come up with something, as they will have a good idea of what is appropriate.

Thanks edencakes. I think I'll ask my customer if she'll settle for 2 cakes. I don't think I'm up to making a cake that big! She wants me to write We'll miss you on the cake- I'm not so sure that's appropriate.

The retiree is a paramedic. Any suggestions?

Here are a few wordng ideas that I hope will help you. But, you can discuss with person that ordered the cake.

If you do two cakes, choose one of these for first cake:

911 emergency dispatches (name) to Retirement!

After (number) years of service, (name) is retiring!

For the second cake, choose one of these:

Thank you for (number) years of service! We'll miss you!

Best wishes in your retirement! We'll miss you!

"Here's to a great ( ) years!" might be nice, just plug in how many years they were there
