it is 1/2 cup but if your recipe calls for sticks it would be better to use sticks if you can. i was trying to make the IMBC recipe and it was calling for 6 sticks so i used 3 cups of butter from the tub and it would not set up. i finally after 15 batches used the 6 sticks and the icing whipped right up. there is a lot of water in the tubs so be careful with what you use it for.

I've never seen butter in tubs. Are you using some sort of bulk brand from someplace like Sams or Costco? If there's a significant amount of water in it, I'm surprised they can sell it as butter and not some sort of "spread." Please share with us the brand you had difficulty with...so we'll all be the wiser.
Thanks!

Just had this conversation last night with my husband....recipes that say a stick of butter, although they sell margerine in 1/2 lb squares, we don't call them sticks. And they don't sell butter in sticks up here!!!! At least in western Canada!

Does anyone know how much is one stick of butter(1/2 cup ect.)?? I know it sounds stupid but we don't have these here..
Lactancia makes butter sticks. I am sure Lactancia is also marketed in London.

Yes our butter comes in 2 1/2 cup blocks.
Where are you buying this butter that comes in 2 1/2 cup blocks? How many lbs is it?

My brother in law accidently bought a 1 lb box of block butter instead of the sticks so I went ahead and quartered them into 4 quarters making it 4 sticks which is 1/2 cup each stick. So, maybe somehow you can quarter them like sticks. Maybe you can make 8 sticks from it, but don't quote me. -Josie
