You people BLOW me away!! I found you using a Google search for shoe cakes and have spent the past 2 nights visiting with you and learning soooo much! Thank you for your generous, sharing spirits! I had one nice lady PM me almost immediately answering my questions!

Total amateur here, but you've convinced me I can make a shoe cake! LOL

My local cake shop only carries the Wilton Gum Paste Mix, but I noticed that Cake Central has Satin Ice Gum Paste Ready-to-Use. Is one better over the other, or is there something else I should look for?

I've never used gum paste before, so if you have any tips, I'd love for you throw them my way!

Thanks so much! Donna

I have not used gumpaste yet, but I just wanted to welcome you to CC. I found it on google too and now I am totally addicted. Everyone here is so friendly and helpful and full of ideas.

Thanks for the welcome! Yes, addicted is the right word! I used to decorate cakes for my family for every occasion, but as we've gotten older, my friend and I laugh and say the Martha in us has died. Well, y'all are getting me excited about cake decorating again! LOL

I have never used a gumpaste mix but if you can't find Tylose powder it should still work for you. I just prefer working with Nicholas Lodge's gumpaste recipe. It can be rolled quite thin without tearing and makes lovely flowers. I use it for gumpaste shoes, bows and ribbons as well.

I'm not sure if you have either of these stores in your area, but I have found pre-made gumpaste by Wilton at Michaels & Hobby Lobby. Normally about $7.99 for a 1 LB bag.

Jo-Ann offers Witon products, you way want to check them to see if they will stock it for you.

If you have a Hobby Lobby store near you, sign up for their weekly email newsletter. In my area (Houston) they are offering 40% off of Wilton Products starting Monday 09Apr07. Secondly, they offer 40% coupons on regular priced items. I have been able to save a lot with those coupons purchasing pans and other things I "think" I need icon_surprised.gif)

Jo-Ann's also offers email coupons for regular priced items.

I'm having a hard time signing up for Michaels email newsletter, but they have coupons in the local & Sunday papers. I get my neighbor to save me hers when we get them...

Hope this helps.

I prefer Nicholas Lodge's gumpaste recipe, but I've used Wilton ready made in a pinch and it worked beautifully!

Thank you sooo much, ladies! First shoe was okay, but the Wilton Gum Paste cracked terribly. I've gotten some suggestions off list to remedy that , so I'll keep plugging away. I can't tell you how much I appreciate all your help! Thanks again! Donna
