Hello!
I desperately need help! I'm making a cake and after I've mixed all ingredients together, it's not a batter, it's more of a dough!!! I don't know whats wrong! The recipe is below:

Madeira Sponge Cake
2 3/4 cups of self raising flour
1 1/3 cup sugar
1 1/4 cup butter
5 medium eggs
3 tbsp milk

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

i checked online to see if there was another recipe for this and most of the ones that i've read have the same ingredients

http://www.odlums.ie/Recipes/R_Madeira.html

this one has a pic of it...i think your recipe is correct

http://bakingforbritain.blogspot.com/2005/10/madeira-cake-with-glass-of-madeira.html

you can try this one as well

http://www.best-cake-recipe.com/sponge-cake-recipe.html

i hope this helps

i am thinking that maybe "sponge" is more of a doughy type of cake since there isn't that much call for liquids whereas your regular cakes have a cup of milk, or oil, or water and so forth...

some cake recipes i do are much thicker than others. i've got a chocolate cake that feels more like a thick brownie batter and almost like a cookie dough than cake batter. it works fine. i would try baking your batter and see how it turns out. if you followed the directions, then it should be fine i would think.

Madeira cake is usually denser than a normal cake. It isn't what a normal "sponge" would be like. It's closer to a pound cake than any other cake. HTH. Could you add a touch more liquid to loosen it up a little? Not sure if that will do the trick or not.

Thank you all so much for your help. I had just never seen anything like it before that is why I was so taken back and scared!! It turned out okay, but I prefer other cakes over this one. Thank you once again!

I did a Madeira cake from Debbie Brown, I think it was. It was doughy, too, and I was terrified it was wrong. It didn't taste very good, but it was fine other than that. Luckily, it was one of my practice cakes, so people understood that not all of my cakes would be so tasteless. It carved well, though!
