I've been doing monthly office bday cakes for my office and I need to serve 25-30 people. I'm having trouble w/the cake size and correct servings. I've been using the Wilton serving chart, but subtract a few servings b/c most of the time they (office folks) cut the slices a bit bigger.

I've done a 12" round and that was too much. Then I tried a 10" & 6" square (2x2 = ~34 servings)...again too much. Of course they don't mind the extra b/c some are bringing slices home...well I would rather give them what they are paying for....One slice per person!! (the extra wasn't really bothering me until last month someone complained to me that they didn't get a slice to take home!!..the nerve!! icon_mad.gif) I was thinking this time I would just do a 10" round, but the wilton chart says it serve 28...so I'm a little worried it MAY not be enough, esp since I may need 30 (some people are not in office everyday, that is why servings is 25-30).

But I already know the 12" round is too much!! Any suggestions?? Should I just go w/the 10"round and take the chance or just move up to the 12" round to be safe??

I allways go by the chart on Earlene Moores hp. I find it to be really good and correct: http://www.earlenescakes.com/ckserchart.htm. It says a 10 inch round should make 30 servings.

I made a 10" round 2 layer with chocolate filling, and b/c I use I extra egg and a box of pudding the layer are a little higher, but it served 30 with a few people having seconds. So it sounds like plenty to me, depending on how tall your layers are.

Yes!!! a 10" round with two layers will feed 30. I make this size all the time and it always is enough!!!

Oh my goodness!!! I think I'm a little piggy! LOL! My son and I finished a 10" in about week, just the two of us. Yikes!

I say a 10" round feeds about 25-30. You should be fine! Not everyone eats cake, and some people, mostly the ladies, will only take a small slice. Are they paying for it? ...cause if not - I wouldn't spend any more time worrying about it!

Yes, they are paying for it (I charge per serving).....and 25-30 is the number of people who will actually eat it. If they don't eat it...they don't pay. But when the person complained to me last month about not being able to take any home to her family......I was like well....you're not paying to take some home to the family...this cake is for everyone at the office!!! But apparently, a few people were taking the extra home, instead of leaving it at the office.

So I just need to make sure I get closer to the 'paid' serving amount w/little left over (maybe an extra slice for the bday folks...if enough left). It's sad ADULTS need to be treated like this!!! icon_confused.gif

I was thinking this time if there was any left I'd just take it home w/me...but we won't eat it!!! And I'd probably upset everyone at work. So I'd rather give them what they pay for....one slice per person!!!

But I thought the Wilton servings usually run kinda on the small side ....I'd be cutting it close w/the 10" round. But sounds like I'll be ok. I'll just do the cutting this time and they'll have to take the size I give them!!!

If the cake is paid for, what does it matter if someone takes it home ? I would MUCH rather that, than have it go stale and thrown out.......

I agree...if it's paid for they can do what they want w/it....but if you 25 people trying to take home 10 slices of cake to share w/family...who gets what??

they are only paying for 25-30 servings and are getting close to 40 (I know my fault not theirs). but I guess the few extra servings are being faught over by people in the office!! some are taking the extra home to family while some think it should be left in the office....since the office is the one paying for the cake, they should get to enjoy the leftovers!!

so rather than try to figure out what to do w/the extra....I'd rather just give them what they pay for 25-30 servings!!! Then I don't have to deal w/the whinning and bickering.
