Hi! I am doing a wedding cake and thought it would look nice if I added a glitter look to it. I would more than likely crush cake sparkles so they are fine. How do I get them on the cake after it is decorated and the icing is set? This is the entire cake, top and sides. Thanks for your help!!

I am not sure what you are using as cake sparkles to crush, but if you grind sugar crystals, they will not longer be shiny, but very dull.

Once the frosting is dry, the sugar or glitter will not stick. If you have a very fine mister, you can mist with water- very lightly - and then sprinkle. Another option, is if is refrigerated, when you take it out, it will have a bit of condensation. they you can add sparkle.

If you are using the gelatin based sparkles (which if you intend to grind them finer, I think you are), DON'T use water to add them to the cake, they will dissolve! I'm afraid these sparkles are best added before the icing has crusted. You could try painting a very thin layer of gum arabic over the cake and then adding the sparkles. I would suggest using disco glitter/dust, it sticks to anything, but I understand you're a bit wary of eating this in the US - (although it is non-toxic and won't do you any harm if you do eat it), I use it all the time with no problems, it sticks to virtually anything, wet or dry - you could use water with these if needed. If you look in my photos you can see a Christmas cake and butterfly cookies I did using them - they are very pretty! Good luck!

I use disco and lustre dusts on dry cakes all the time. I just use a dry brush and it leaves a very light sparkly covering

Isn't disco glitter fab?! I have it in virtually all the colours and will make up any excuse to use some! thumbs_up.gificon_biggrin.gif

If you grind cake sparkles, Like the flakes you get from Wilton, they will keep their shine. I use a mortar and pestle, but you can easily put them in a small bowl and crush them with a back of a spoon, but I have never put them on a dry cake. Sorry I can't help you there.
