I am making the spiderman bust cake. My problem is my son wants choc pudding filling. How long can a cake with pudding sit out?

aaaaawww,come on guys,little help paaaleeeese.

I used the snack pack pudding on the last cake I made, just for the family here at home, the chocolate. It set out for a couple days before it was gone and it was fine

Actually I really wouldn't have thought of it either lol, but I was at the store and was going to buy just some instant pudding, and the snack pack pudding caught my eye and I thought, hmmmm!! Anything to save time lol! But it worked out great So I just "accidently" figured it out

I'm almost embarrassed to say this, but what the heck--it's cyberspace.
My husband has brought cake with pudding filling (the instant pudding whipped with 1/2 milk, 1/2 whipping cream) to work and those guys just cut into it, NEVER stick it in the fridge and nosh on it for a good 3 days. I was shocked and repulsed, but not a one got sick, even remotely. My husband (who is VERY picky) swears it was just as good on day 3 as it was on day 1. He has done this a couple times, even though I begged him to stick it in the fridge.
I would NOT recommend this--just thought I'd let you know I hadn't killed anyone yet with pudding gone bad.
Good luck!

That's funny, also good to know! lol The only thing that surprised me was that the cake would last so long around a bunch of guys

Well, you've got my curiosity up now. I decided to go to the source and find out just how long it can safely be left out unrefrigerated once opened. I'm hoping to hear back within a couple of days. As soon as I do, I'll let everyone know what Hunt's has to say. Geeeeez, I sure hope they say "3 days" lol

Even though no one got sick the times that a cake has been left out, would you really want to risk that if it shouldn't be left out that long??
I think that once you open a pudding cup it needs to be refrigerated.
Of course, SquirrellyCakes has posted some awesome information about this subject... http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-decorating-ftopict-3618-pudding.html

my wilton instructor suggested that we use snack packs so i filled one of my cakes with a vanilla pudding that didn't have any dairy in it... i made the cake on sunday, frosted it and then we had class monday night so i decorated a little and did the rest on tuesday... i ate a piece on thursday and my husband brought the rest of the cake to work on friday and they all loved it, they want me to make more so i guess it'll last quite awhile

This was a topic of discussion once before that I know of. Someone on this site, and I have no idea who, contacted the manufacturer of the pudding and was told that it should be refrigerated immediately upon opening. I would be very careful about leaving it sitting out, especially if someone else was going to be the one eating it.

Jeanne G, longtime member of the Wilton site, contacted the various snack pudding manufacturers and they all stated the same thing. They were all horrified that these pudding would be used in such a manner. They are only safe at room temperature until they are opened. The only safe pudding type of fillings are the commercial sleeve types where the manufacturer specifically states they can be kept at room temperature once opened.
There should be an older post on the Wilton site from the last year or two from Jeanne G containing these responses.

Well I have to say I made spiderman. The cake was frozen so I figured it could sit out for a while. It sat out for 5 hours and when we ate the cake the pudding was still cold , the frozen cake layers kept the pudding cold, thats what I'm thinking. I was just wondering what all the wedding cakes have in them that sit out for hours????????

Well, I also think that people believe b/c it didn't make anyone sick before that it's ok to use, but that's not true at all.
I don't understand b/c I would be SO afraid of getting my family sick or STRANGERS! That's one quick way to be out of business, so why take the chance?

Your cake looks great! You did an awesome job! I made this cake in November for my great-nephew and he was speechless when we brought it in to the party room!

Oh thank you so much for being honest!!
I baked my cakes over a two day period and wrapped and refrigerated them... But I put them together last night (with pudding that I made with milk and the box mix) and I left it on the counter (covered) last night (the kitchen was very cool, since the weather is cold) and I brought it into work this morning and there was no room in the fridge, so I set it on the counter. I have never filled a cake with pudding before... and after a few hours, I noticed that the cake was shifting, so of course I assumed it was the pudding. So I made room in the fridge at work.. But I was afraid I was going to get everyone sick.
You're my new hero... Now, let's just all pray that the pudding will stiffen back up before we cut into it this afternoon at 3pm :)
Come on... Pray with me now. :)
Amen!
