I could really use anyone's help on any ideas for a solar system cake. It's for an 8-year-old boy who loves science and the solar system. I've been online since last night trying to find anything I can. I'm not sure to incorporate all the plants or just maybe one with a fondant space ship landing on it. Cake not due till next weekend so I have time, although I'm trying to get a jump on things now, seeing I'm in an idea rut...HELP, PLEASE!

Could you make a sheet cake and have the top black, with stars in it and have the sun in the far left corner and then just continue out with the planets?? I'm sure if you made it on a small scale, you could probably make the planets from bc....like how people make bubbles/pearls from bc.

How about if you do a big round cake (use a full sized sports ball pan) to make the sun (the center of the solar system) and then you use wire to attach all of the other planets (which you can make out of gumpaste or maybe even cake scrap bon-bons).
Another idea that came to mind is similar, but makes more cake. Make a half ball pan sun in the middle, and then make cupcakes that represent each planet and place them in the right order around the sun on a platter.
I cant wait to see a picture!

you could use ball pans for the planets. Or make one big ball pan for the sun and do cupcakes decorated differently for each planet. That's what I envisioned when I first read solar system. Or do a ball pan for the sun and do fondant "pearls" on wires "orbitting" it. It depends on how complicated you want to get.

Thanks for the help. I was actually thinking of the same thing as Mikaza. But maybe just use half a ball pan-( only have 15 people at most). Thanks again, and I'll make sure to post the finished product!

Here's a link, but it has rockets--if you scroll down there is a few planet pics. http://www.vatsaas.org/rtv/misc/cakes/rocketsoncakes.aspx
this one has one of the star wars: http://www.winecountrycakes.com/cake_gallery.html#
this one might be easier: http://www.theatheistmama.com/2006/02/mmmmm_cake.html
Hope that helps and give some ideas!

There is a neat one in Cinda's Creative Cakes, in the SciFi/Fantasy section of her Photo Gallery under page 3

If your cake is going to be tiered then maybe you can color it a dark blue and add white stars.
You can add a sun at the top of the cake and write "Happy Birthday".
And for an added effect think of a way to color balls like planets and have them sticking out of the cake.
That was a bit more then a suggestion! : )
I'm sure you'll think of a creative idea!

Try covering a large cake board with dark blue fondant, create a moon and stars on the board with fondant . You can make saturn with 3-D rings around it with cardboard or dried fondant. Then make a 3-d cake space ship and set it in "space". The thrusters can be fondant that is curved into a cup shape. About the size of what will fit into your palm. Make wings like the space shuttle and a nose as well. You can put radars on the top of the ship, they are made just like the thrusters.
Just an idea.
LOL on your cake!!!

Sugarwithstyle...I'm also making a solar system!
Against a dark royal blue background (1/2" foam board) I'm placing a 6" fondant covered "sun" in the center, surrounded by the nine butterceam iced cupcake "planets" and however many iced mini-cupcake "stars" around the edges I can fit. I've also made a bunch of tiny gumpaste star cutouts to go between and around the "star" mini-cupacakes.
The "sun" will be painted yellow, orange, etc. and the planets will be decorated with assorted sprinkles and slices of gummi candies, etc. by a group of 18 six and seven year olds. I also have made some swirly circles out of melted hard candies, one of which will be the rings around Saturn, while the others get broken into shards to go around the sun.
All these ideas came from "The Artful Cupcake," by Marcianne Miller, which was suggested to me by a very generous poster here on Cake Central.com.
I love this site!
