I just got the book & am ready to try a few. I'm going to make the Darn Good Choc cake next week for a kids bday party for my son. This weekend we are celebrating with our family so I'd like to make something to wow my familly. Any suggestions? The only cakes I've made for my family so far are cakes decorated with bc. They rave over the way the cake Looks, but now I'd like to wow them over how the cake Tastes.

My favorite cake recipe right now is making a white chocolate cake.

A box of white cake mix, 4 egg whites, oil as listed, a box of white chocolate pudding mix, milk instead of water, & approx 1C of melted white chocolate.

I have tried quite a few and the one that gets the most rave reviews from my family has been the Snickerdoodle cake- I think they liked it becasue I don't usually make anything with that flavor- they like my old tried and true recipes- I'm looking forward to trying others soon. The buttermilk devils food is really good too!!

My family LOVES the turtle cake from the CMD! Make sure to line your cake pan with parchment if your making it for someone else though. It is so sticky and yummy it will stick in the pan. It freezes great too!

My mom gave me a recipe that she found and it was fabulous! The only thing is that I've only ever made it in a bundt pan and used coconut pecan frosting. But I'm sure it would work in rounds or 9X13! You take a chocolate cake mix (any kind) and add into the batter....a can of caramel frosting and mix it in good! It is the most moist and heavenly thing you've ever tasted! I hope someone out there tries it and loves it as much as I do!

This is the only way I make my cakes. A friend of mine gave this to me - I am not sure where she got it but it's great!!! thumbs_up.gif Don't follow the box recipe and add: (I haven't added this to a real cake yet, but I am sure it will work.)

1 cup water
1/4 cup milk
1/4 cup sour cream
1/2 stick of butter
3 eggs
2 teaspoons of vanilla

Mix for about 10 min

You can do this to any cake. It makes the cake really good and moist. Every one loves it. icon_biggrin.gif

Wow that thread is from 2005!
I was always reading about the CMD here so that's why I got the book. Now after reading that thread I see that most of the cakes in there are just average.
What recipes are you guys using for choc cake?

The Darn Good Chocolate cake from the cake doctor is AWESOME! I make this cake everytime we have family gatherings or friends over and it is always a huge hit. I make it as a bundt cake and drizzle the shiny chocolate icing on top. I have always wanted to try this cake as a layer cake with a chocolate mousse filling and a ganache frosting! Hmmm, looks like I have an experiment to do this weekend.

hillmn, the darn good cake is the one that I think I'm going to try. Do you make it as the recipe is written, or do you alter it at all? Choc mousse filling sounds delicious, do you have a recipe for that? I thought about the Choc Cream Cheese from the book. What shiny icing are you using?

I use a Devils Food cake when I make it and I make it as the recipe is, no alterations. There should be a frosting in the book called Shiny Chocolate Icing. I have a chocolate buttercream recipe at home that would be a good fillling. I will send the recipe when I get home, I don't have it with me right now. You will not be dissapointed.

I like the Bacardi Rum Cake and adapt it to different flavors. At holiday time I made the cake with espresso for liquid and made traditional marscapone filling, brushed the cakes with the glaze and oh I substituted Kahlua for rum. I also put espresso in my BC.... Everyone adored the cake.

Also the apricot nectar cake. I have subbed different nectars like peach and mango as well. It is a delicious cake.

Did the Darned good chocolate for my Valentine cupcakes and it was delish also.

The cardamom cake is yummy too and has a "different" flavor from the cardamom...if you like it.

Now I want to try the Snickerdoodle one.

Don't have the book in front of me so I don't remember the names of each cake...but the Basic White made with yogurt is really good. The Snickerdoodle cake is good. The Peanut Butter Cake is good but that one may be in the Chocolate Book she has...the Lemon Wite Chocolate Cake is great...believe it's in the Chocolate Book also. Right now my mind is blank as to the ones I have baked...when I get my hands on my book I'll let you know.

Chocolate Cake Mix Doctor by Anne Byrn...lots of great recipes. She also has one called Cupcakes from the Cake Mix Doctor...just bought that one but looks great...has cupcake and muffin recipes. I also found a neat cake cookbook using mixes on the clearance table at Books a Million...Quick Fix with Cakes Mix by Lia Roessner Wilson...some different recipes in this one too.

I made the Cake Mix Dr.'s Darn Good Chocolate Cake for family this weekend. I made it as the recipe states but substituted milk for water. Everyone raved & raved about it. Just wanted to let everyone know who hasn't tried it.
