All American Question! What Is The Difference?

Hello,
I guess this is something I should know, but since I wasn´t born and raised in the US I don´t....
What is the difference between Ding-Dongs and Cupcakes by Hostess??
I was asked to make a cake that tastes just like the little hostess cupcakes so I thought, no problem, I´ve seen the recipe on CC BUT now I realize that the recipes are for ding-dongs not cupcakes.
Is the filling the same for both?
Thanks soo much!!

I don't know what the "actual Hostess" definition of the difference between the two is, but here's my "personal" opinion of the difference.
The Cupcakes are a taller, lighter, milk chocolate flavored cake with a thicker coating of milk chocolate frosting on just the top (plus the little swirl of white frosting).
The Ding Dongs are a flatter, denser, darker chocolate flavored cake with a thin coating of darker chocolate "pourable type" icing on the entire cake.
IMO, the filling tastes the same.
HHHHUUUUMMMMMMMM.....it's been a LONG time since I had either of these. Maybe tonight's dessert has been planned! LOL LOL
Good luck with your cake!

This is funny - Just finished copying a cream filling someone just posted. http://forum.cakecentral.com/cake-decorating-ftopict-193331.html
A hostess cupcake is just a chocolate cupcake+filling+ chocolate frosting.

LOL
All due respect, and recognizing that tastes differ..........
No way does Little Debbie taste better than Hostess! Man, you can taste that extra dollar and half, and it is so worth it!
LOL
LOL!
I always think Hostess tastes dry....

There is a recipe on this site for a Giant Ding Dong Cake. I tried it once for my dh's soldiers and it is the most requested cake from them now! The guys all said it takes them back to when they were young. It is a devils food cake mix with a chocolate ganache covering and a creamy filling. Just like the little ones.
