Hello,
I guess this is something I should know, but since I wasn´t born and raised in the US I don´t....
What is the difference between Ding-Dongs and Cupcakes by Hostess??
I was asked to make a cake that tastes just like the little hostess cupcakes so I thought, no problem, I´ve seen the recipe on CC BUT now I realize that the recipes are for ding-dongs not cupcakes.
Is the filling the same for both?
Thanks soo much!! thumbs_up.gif

Yes I'm pretty sure all of the Hostess filling is the same...ding dongs, cupcakes, twinkies, etc....

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but Ding dongs are cake only with the filling and the cupcakes are cake with an icing topping and filling.

Thanks so much... so just to be 100% sure, is the chocolate cake almost the same as well?

It looks like the ding dongs are completely coated with a thin dark chocolate while the cupcakes have a thick milk chocolate icing on top... same cake and filling for all practical purposes.

I don't know what the "actual Hostess" definition of the difference between the two is, but here's my "personal" opinion of the difference.

The Cupcakes are a taller, lighter, milk chocolate flavored cake with a thicker coating of milk chocolate frosting on just the top (plus the little swirl of white frosting).

The Ding Dongs are a flatter, denser, darker chocolate flavored cake with a thin coating of darker chocolate "pourable type" icing on the entire cake.

IMO, the filling tastes the same.

HHHHUUUUMMMMMMMM.....it's been a LONG time since I had either of these. Maybe tonight's dessert has been planned! LOL LOL

Good luck with your cake!

they are similar except for the chocolate. Ding Dongs have a crispy chocolate covering while the cupcake has a soft chocolate frosting on top. Filling and cake are the same.

You're wrong about that Kitagrl. icon_twisted.gificon_wink.gificon_lol.gif Hostess is better.icon_razz.gif

The Ding Dongs are covered in chocolate and have filling more spread out and the cupcakes are iced with chocolate and then have some icing swirl on it. But they are essentially the same. thumbs_up.gif

This is funny - Just finished copying a cream filling someone just posted. http://forum.cakecentral.com/cake-decorating-ftopict-193331.html

A hostess cupcake is just a chocolate cupcake+filling+ chocolate frosting.

There is a recipe on this site for a Giant Ding Dong Cake. I tried it once for my dh's soldiers and it is the most requested cake from them now! The guys all said it takes them back to when they were young. It is a devils food cake mix with a chocolate ganache covering and a creamy filling. Just like the little ones.
